Although this fight makes perfect sense for the UFC middleweight division, there was a time in which many thought it would never come to pass.
After defeating Robert Whittaker last July, Du Plessis would find himself face-to-face with the then-champion Israel Adesanya in what is now an infamous post-fight interview.
However, Adesanya would soon after lose his middleweight title to Sean Strickland and announce his sabbatical from the sport.
This led to a middleweight title main event at UFC 297 this past January between Strickland and Du Plessis, with Du Plessis earning the split-decision win via judges’ scorecards.
He has yet to defend his title, with rumors of an immediate rematch with Strickland being reported. However, Adesanya stepped back into the fray and these two rivals will now settle the score in the UFC 305 main event.
Adesanya has both the height and reach advantages and, despite almost a year away from action, is listed as the slight betting favorite over the champion at (-122) at FanDuel Sportsbook.
Du Plessis is listed closely as (-104) at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Australian Steve Erceg is looking to get back into the win column after suffering his first loss in the UFC - a loss that came against Alexandre Pantoja for the UFC flyweight championship at UFC 301 back in May.
Erceg takes on the number-four ranked Kai Kara-France - a training partner of former champion and title challenger Israel Adesanya. Kara-France has dropped his last two fights - most recently finding himself on the wrong side of a split decision against Amir Albazi last June.
Although Erceg will stand four inches taller than his opponent, it is Kara-France that will have the slight edge in reach.
However, it is the former title challenger Erceg who is listed as the favorite to win at (-172) at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Sitting just outside the top 10 in the lightweight division, Dan Hooker looks to get back into title contention with a win over number-five-ranked Mateusz Gamrot.
After a rough stretch that saw him go 1-4, Dan Hooker has now won his back-to-back fights, most recently earning a split-decision win over Jalin Turner that took place at UFC 290 last July. This will be his first fight of 2024.
Grappling specialist and BJJ black belt Mateusz Gamrot followed his 2022 loss to Beneil Dariush with three wins in a row. Securing two wins in 2023, Gamrot most recently defeated former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos by decision at UFC 299 back in March.
Hooker is the taller fighter and will have a 4.5-inch reach advantage, but it comes as no real surprise that Gamrot is still listed as the (-360) at FanDuel Sportsbook favorite in this match-up.

Another Australian native and fan-favorite on this main card is number-10-ranked UFC heavyweight Tai Tuivasa. He hopes to stave off Jairzinho Rozenstruik and snap his four-fight losing streak in the process.
Tuivasa has lost via KO twice and submission twice in his last four appearances - most recently tapping out to Marcin Tybura in the first round of their bout last March.
Former professional kickboxer Jairzinho Rozenstruik has also struggled as of late, holding a record of 2-3 over his last five fights. However, he is coming off of a big TKO win over Shamil Gaziev that also took place back in March.
With a three-inch reach advantage over Tuivasa, Rozenstruik is listed as the (-230) favorite to win at FanDuel Sportsbook.

In what will be only his third UFC appearance, Carlos Prates (-390) at FanDuel Sportsbook, will be the biggest betting favorite on the UFC 305 main card.
He takes on Li Jingliang - an unranked welterweight who has gone 3-3 in his last six fights. Jingliang lost his most recent bout via split decision against Daniel Rodriguez.
After a successful appearance on the Contender Series, Prates has gone on to defeat Trevin Giles and Charles Radtke in the UFC - both by knockout.
Prates will stand one inch taller than his opponent and will have a significant six-inch reach advantage in this main card kick-off fight.
