Head to Head Record: Djokovic leads 26-22
Most Recent Match: 2019 Wimbledon Final, Djokovic 3-2, 7-6(5) 1-6 7-6(4) 4-6 13-12
Group Björn Borg favorites Djokovic and Federer will face off with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
The two players dropped their respective matches against Dominic Thiem and won against Matteo Berrettini.
As a result, the tennis legends will duel it out for the second and last spot in the semis.
Djokovic also has the possibility of closing out the year at the top of the ATP ranking as additional motivation.
If the Serb wins the title, he will automatically secure the number 1 spot.
In case Nadal does not make it to the final, finishing as the runner-up will be enough for Djokovic.
Federer, meanwhile, could add a seventh ATP Finals trophy, which would extend his record as the most successful player in the tournament’s history.
2019 Record: 54-10, 5 titles
Djokovic put up a valiant effort against Dominic Thiem.
The Serb nearly mounted a comeback during the third and decisive set, having won the first one and dropped the second.
Djokovic came back from two breaks, briefly held the lead during the tie-break and even saved a match point.
In the end, however, it wasn’t enough to overcome a red-hot Thiem.
The Serb remains in control of his own fate, as winning against Federer will automatically secure the group’s second seed.
Djokovic was his usual self in the tournament’s second match, but Thiem deservedly walked away with a hard-fought win.
2019 Record: 52-9, 4 titles
Despite walking away with a 2-0 win over Matteo Berrettini, Federer did not have it easy in his match against the young Italian.
Berrettini took the first set all the way to the tie-break and put up a fight in the second set.
In the end, the Swiss player was able to prevail and came out victorious.
Federer’s match wasn’t as intense as Djokovic, which could be his biggest advantage.
He will need to cut down on unforced errors, which became a trend during the final games of his match against Berrettini.
Just as every other Djokovic vs. Federer clash, this one looks quite promising.
Given that a spot in the semifinals is on the line, the stakes will be even higher.
Djokovic dominated Berrettini in the first match, although the Italian’s errors also played a significant part.
He then fell to group leader Dominic Thiem in a very close match.
Federer, meanwhile, suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Austrian and did not look quite as good as Djokovic during the match.
He bounced back to beat Berrettini 2-0, but his win wasn’t as convincing as Djokovic’s.
The Serb won the last five matches between the two, including their semifinals match in last year’s edition of this tournament.
Prediction: Djokovic 2-0.
