Some Signs of Positivity for Beleaguered Tottenham Hotspur

For the most part, this has been a season to forget for Tottenham Hotspur. After only narrowly missing out on Champions League soccer in Ange Postecoglou’s debut season last time out, the goal at the start of 2024/25 was to qualify for Europe’s premier competition. Even with a third of the campaign remaining, that accomplishment is no longer achievable.

Tottenham may yet book a spot in the Champions League by winning the Europa League, but they will not do so by finishing in the top five of the Premier League. Even after a run of three victories on the bounce, Spurs find themselves 11 points adrift of Bournemouth in fifth. A first bottom-half finish since 2007/08 remains a genuine possibility.

At the same time, one can detect a degree of optimism returning to the Tottenham camp. Those three consecutive wins against Brentford (2-0), Manchester United (1-0) and Ipswich Town (4-1) have given Postecoglou some breathing space.

The under-fire Australian has justifiably highlighted Tottenham’s injury issues this term and he would no doubt argue it is not a coincidence that results have picked up after getting a few players back.

In the grand scheme of things, it does not really matter if Spurs finish ninth or 15th. Their fans would settle for virtually any position (barring relegation, of course) if it meant Tottenham went all the way in the Europa League. Without a piece of silverware since 2008, the club’s supporters are desperate to see captain Son Heung-min lift a trophy.

The last 16 of the Europa League begins next week. Another win in the Premier League on Wednesday would help Tottenham to build more momentum ahead of the first leg against AZ.

Manchester City Must Wish the Season Was Over Already

It is fair to say this season has not gone to plan for Manchester City either. The defending champions were the sportsbooks’ favorites for the title before a ball had been kicked and it was they who topped the table at the beginning of November. Then came an astonishing collapse from which City are yet to recover.

Since their downturn began with a 2-1 defeat by Bournemouth in their 10th game of 2024/25, City have a dismal record by their own sky-high standards. Had the season started that day, Pep Guardiola’s side would be 13th in the standings, below the likes of Brentford and Everton.

Unlike Tottenham, though, City are still in the mix for Champions League qualification. They are currently fourth, but it is very tight in that section of the table: a gap of five points separates Nottingham Forest in third from Fulham in 10th.

City’s confidence has no doubt been dented by back-to-back losses to Real Madrid and Liverpool. The first of those saw Guardiola’s team knocked out of the Champions League before the last 16 for the first time in the Catalan’s tenure. The second emphasized how far City have fallen from their previous title-winning level.

A top-five finish would not be a disastrous outcome for City, who are also targeting glory in the FA Cup. Yet given how badly things have gone up to now, they would be forgiven for wishing the season was ending soon.

Difficult Game to Call but Only One Choice for Sports Bettors

The key to sports betting is finding value in the market. That is not the same as choosing the most likely outcome. If Liverpool were playing Torquay United at Anfield, there would be little point in backing a straightforward home victory because the winnings would be miniscule. It is better to find odds that you feel are out of kilter with the probability of the outcome in question.

Take this game, for instance. It is not necessarily the case that Tottenham Hotspur are better placed to beat Manchester City than vice versa. But from the perspective of a sports bettor, the smart money is on Spurs. In our judgment this match is close to a 50-50, or perhaps a 45-55 in City’s favor. But at a price of +240, Tottenham look overpriced.

Bear in mind, too, that the north Londoners have enjoyed plenty of success in this fixture down the years. They have already beaten City at home this term, triumphing 2-1 in the EFL Cup in October. In the last nine meetings between the pair at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Guardiola’s team have lost six times.

City also look set to be without Erling Haaland, who could make the bench but is unlikely to start. Their confidence has taken a major hit on the back of those losses to Real Madrid and Liverpool, whereas Spurs are starting to get some belief (and injured players) back.

Postecoglou’s team are still flawed and question marks over his leadership remain, but City are also in a bad place right now. At the odds offered by the sportsbooks, a Spurs victory is the way to go on Wednesday.
