Tottenham Hotspur vs. Chelsea Prediction

Tottenham Just Cannot Seem to String a Winning Run Together

Only a fortnight has passed since Tottenham Hotspur sliced through Manchester City time and time again in a stunning 4-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Granted, Spurs rode their luck in the first 15 minutes of that game, but thereafter they delivered a masterful display to register one of their greatest victories in Premier League history, notwithstanding City’s broader struggles.

“[I’m] just so pleased for the players in the belief they have in trying to play the way we want to, and then you get a reward like that,” Ange Postecoglou said afterwards. “I think it just hopefully furthers our progression.”

Not quite. In typical Tottenham fashion, that giant step forwards against Manchester City has been followed by two steps in the opposite direction. Postecoglou’s side proceeded to draw their next game with Ipswich Town, before falling to a 1-0 defeat by Bournemouth in the recent midweek round of Premier League fixtures.

In truth, Spurs could easily have lost 3-0 or 4-0 at the Vitality Stadium. It is not an exaggeration to say they were inferior in all departments. True, no team would find it easy to cope without their two starting center-backs and their first-choice goalkeeper. But Tottenham’s baffling inconsistency predated the injuries suffered by Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario.

Postecoglou’s men seem unable to string a positive run of results together. They have won back-to-back league matches just once this term. That is not good enough for a team that is targeting Champions League qualification.

All is not lost. We are only in December and Tottenham are just six points behind the top four. But when you have no way of knowing which version of a side is going to turn up on any given day, you are in trouble.

Chelsea Outperforming Expectations Amid Talk of Title Tilt

Many felt Chelsea would also be erratic and unreliable this term. The Blues began the 2024/25 campaign with yet another new manager in the dugout. That man, Enzo Maresca, was handed a bloated squad after another chaotic summer at Stamford Bridge.

On top of all that, Chelsea have the youngest squad in the Premier League. The average age of the starting XIs they have used this term is just 23.2, significantly lower than the next-youngest teams Bournemouth and Tottenham (25.4). Many opined that a lack of experience would breed inconsistency from week to week.

Yet that has not been the case. Chelsea thumped Southampton 5-1 on Wednesday to move up to second in the table, seven points behind league leaders Liverpool. They have now won three league games in a row and have lost just once since the opening weekend.

Maresca deserves huge credit for the work he has done so far. He has wasted little time in giving Chelsea an identity and stamping his ideals all over the squad. He has shown himself to be tactically astute and, so far at least, has managed to keep the players on board.

The question on everyone’s lips is: are Chelsea title challengers? At this point you would have to say yes. The upcoming schedule is pretty kind to Maresca’s men, aside from this trip to Tottenham perhaps.

After this weekend, Chelsea are due to face Brentford, Everton, Fulham, Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace. They have a chance to close the gap to Liverpool over the next few weeks. A victory over Tottenham would provide Chelsea with another boost as they aim to reassert their credentials.

Chelsea Can Collect All Three Points at the Home of Their Rivals

Tottenham’s biggest rivalries are undoubtedly Arsenal, but Chelsea probably rank second on that list. As for the Blues, Tottenham are the team their supporters most want to beat at the start of the season - more so than fellow west London sides like Fulham and Brentford, both of whom are much smaller clubs than Chelsea.

Pleasingly for Chelsea fans, their team has had great success in this fixture in recent days. The Blues have won four of their last five visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in north London, including a 4-1 win last season in an extraordinary game which saw Spurs continue to play an aggressive, offensive brand of soccer after being reduced to nine men.

In fairness to Postecoglou’s side, they tend to be much better at home than away. There is also evidence that they are, somewhat counterintuitively, stronger against the division’s top teams than those outside the elite. This season has already brought victories over Manchester City, Manchester United and Aston Villa, for instance.

But Chelsea look like a superior side right now. They have the attacking quality to cut through a second-string Tottenham defence, while they are also starting to look more solid at the back too. In our view, blue will be the color in London this weekend at least.
