Manchester United vs. Manchester City Prediction April 6

Manchester United vs. Manchester City Pick

There have been false dawns before this season, but it does look like Manchester City are improving. Pep Guardiola’s side can beat Manchester United in this one.

Manchester United All-in on Europa League Amid More Pain

Manchester United supporters who lived through the Alex Ferguson era used to relish the business end of the Premier League season. These days, many members of the Old Trafford faithful would be happy for the top-flight campaign to end tomorrow. With eight fixtures left to fulfil, United are in the unhappy and unfamiliar position of having nothing left to play for.

A 1-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest in the midweek round of matches left United stuck in the bottom half of the table. They sit 13th going into the weekend, seven points adrift of Bournemouth in 10th. Even if eighth place proves to be enough for Europe, Ruben Amorim's side are 10 points shy of that position.

Talking of Europe, it is in that basket that United have placed their remaining eggs. A Europa League quarter-final against Lyon looms on the horizon, with the first leg set for Thursday.

If United were to win that tournament, they would have another trophy to add to the Old Trafford cabinet, plus a place in next season's Champions League. But if they fall short on the continent, this season will have been an unmitigated failure.

If Amorim did not know it already, the last few months have demonstrated what a tough job he has on his hands. United have been stuck in a rut for some time. Having spent hundreds of millions of dollars in recent years, the manager cannot count on limitless backing in the transfer market this summer. The squad currently at his disposal is mediocre at best.

A victory over Manchester City would not necessarily hint at a grander revival, but it would at least give United fans something to cheer about. The Red Devils won the reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium and they are now looking to complete the double over their local rivals for the first time since 2019/20.

Manchester City Can Still Salvage Something From This Season

Manchester City will not finish in the top two of the Premier League this season for the first time since 2016/17, Pep Guardiola’s first campaign at the helm. Third place is still possible, but Nottingham Forest are the favorites to finish just behind Liverpool and Arsenal.

By their own sky-high standards, this has been a massively disappointing year for City. An astonishing collapse in the fall sent them crashing out of title contention, and they have looked a shadow of their former imperious selves ever since. The core of this City team has been allowed to grow old together, and 2024/25 has ultimately proved to be a season too far.

All is not lost yet, however. If City were to win the FA Cup (they face Forest in the semi-finals at the end of this month) and qualify for the Champions League, this could hardly be called a disastrous season. Achieving both those feats would also give Guardiola's men a sense of momentum going into the summer.

The sportsbooks like City’s chances of finishing in the top five, but there is still work to do. Chelsea climbed above them and into fourth place thanks to a 1-0 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday, while Newcastle United are a point behind the champions having played a game fewer.

Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion remain in the mix too, and a strong end to the season could propel Fulham or Bournemouth into contention. Still, City have shown signs of improvement of late and that should ultimately be enough to get them over the line.

Go With the Away Team as Manchester City Head Across Town

Amorim admitted after the loss to Nottingham Forest that his team were not decisive enough in the final third. That has been a familiar failing this season, with the team far too reliant on Bruno Fernandes for inspiration in the final third.

Rodri has been a huge loss for Manchester City this term, but Guardiola’s side have looked a little more solid of late. They were barely troubled by an admittedly poor Leicester team last time out, while only four teams have shipped fewer than their five goals over the last six games.

City will be without the injured Erling Haaland this weekend, but they still have enough attacking quality to get the job done. Omar Marmoush will lead the line, supported by at least three of Savinho, Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.

United have not been at all convincing at Old Trafford this term. Their supporters will take heart from the fact City have been below par too, but the visitors are clear favorites in this one. Go for a victory for Guardiola's men in the last edition of the Manchester derby.
