Manchester City Looking To Get Title Bid Back on Track

For the first time since 2006, Manchester City suffered a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions when they went down to Brighton & Hove Albion immediately prior to the November international break. City were 1-0 up and cruising at half-time at the Amex Stadium, but they were powerless to resist as Brighton battled their way back into the game in the second period.

City have problems. The most obvious one is the absence of Rodri, who is out for the season with a serious knee injury. City’s possession game is not as controlled or structured without their midfield metronome dictating play in the center of the park. They are also much easier to play through without the ball.

That is not their only issue right now, however. City are not playing with the sort of intensity we have grown accustomed to in the Guardiola era. Their press has not been effective of late, while they have looked curiously lethargic at times. On top of that, they are more reliant on Erling Haaland for goals than ever before.

No one should go overboard, though. City have had more than their fair share of injuries to deal with. And for all the difficulties, they are still second in the Premier League and just five points adrift of Liverpool at the summit of the standings. City have been off the pace at this stage of the campaign before, only to eat away at the gap after Christmas.

Even so, Guardiola’s team need to get out of this rut as quickly as possible. Perhaps the uncertainty over the manager’s future (he is out of contract next summer) is playing on the minds of the players, but that should not be used as an excuse. City need to regroup and rediscover the verve that has helped them win six of the last seven Premier League titles.

Tottenham Hotspur Need to Become More Reliable

To paraphrase Forrest Gump, Tottenham Hotspur are like a box of chocolates: you never know what you are going to get. Ange Postecoglou’s side are incredibly unreliable, having alternated between wins and losses in their last eight games. Spurs are an all-or-nothing team - only one of their 17 games in all competitions has been a draw.

It is too often a case of one step forward, two steps back for the north Londoners. After winning 3-0 at Manchester United, Spurs threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Brighton. After thrashing West Ham United 4-1, they lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace. And most recently, after a confident 4-1 victory over Aston Villa, Postecoglou’s team suffered a shock home defeat by Ipswich Town, who had not won a match prior to their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham can take some solace from the underlying numbers. The expected goals data, which compares the quality of chances a team creates and concedes, ranks them third for overall performance in 2024/25, behind only Liverpool and Manchester City.

Yet there is something brittle about this team. Tottenham play some of the most attractive soccer in England, but their out-of-possession structure in recent games has left a lot to be desired. They are not convincing when defending set-pieces and have a mediocre away record at best. Put simply, in their current form Spurs are too flawed to finish in the top four.

There is a long way to go, of course, and it would be a mistake to write them off less than a third of the way through the season. But Tottenham have plenty of improving to do if they are to secure a return to the Champions League.

Manchester City Can Return to Winning Ways in This Match

Tottenham recently beat Manchester City 2-1 in the EFL Cup, but that was against a second-string side and came in front of their own fans. An away game at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League is a different proposition entirely.

It is true that City have not been themselves of late, and Spurs’ proficiency in transition means they should be able to find the back of the net here. But Tottenham have defensive issues of their own, especially without the injured Micky van de Ven. Everything points to a high-scoring game in Manchester.

Overall, it is hard to look past a City win. Guardiola has had two weeks to mull over the loss in form and he will no doubt have come up with a solution.

It is not possible to replace Rodri with one other player, but the City boss is a genius at coming up with fixes to problems. Even if his team are not perfect on Saturday, they should be able to outscore a Tottenham side that have lost three of their last four away games in the Premier League.
