Liverpool would have won the Premier League title if Crystal Palace had beaten Arsenal on Wednesday. The Eagles did not quite manage that, with the two teams playing out a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium. Although that outcome kept the title race just about alive, many Liverpool fans - especially the match-going sort - were pleased with the result.
Winning the title at 10pm B.S.T on a midweek night after a game in north London would have felt incomplete. That scoreline between Arsenal and Palace means Liverpool now have the chance to get their hands on the prize in front of their own people at Anfield. That is the dream scenario.
Liverpool fans have waited a long time for this. They have won only one title previously in the Premier League era, and that came in the pandemic-interrupted campaign of 2019/20. Jurgen Klopp’s team secured the championship that year while playing inside empty stadiums. Something vital was missing.
You have to go all the way back to 1990 to find the last time Liverpool were crowned champions of England with supporters on the terraces. Thirty-five years later and the Reds are ready to repeat that feat.
On Sunday, Arne Slot’s side need only to avoid defeat by Tottenham to get over the line. A draw would move them on to 80 points; Arsenal’s maximum tally with four matches remaining is 79. Liverpool are almost there.
Their performances may have dipped a little in recent weeks, but there is no doubt that Liverpool have been the best team in England this season. Slot has done a fantastic job in building on Klopp’s work, making tweaks here and there without completely tearing up his predecessor’s template. It is almost time for Slot, his players and the Liverpool fans to celebrate.

Tottenham finished fifth in the Premier League last time out. Had they managed to repeat that achievement, which was their principal objective before the start of the campaign, they would have qualified for the Champions League. Instead, Spurs are fifth-bottom with just a handful of games remaining. They are on course for their lowest finish in the top flight since 1976/77.
In one sense, this has been Tottenham’s worst season for almost half a century. Yet it could turn out to be one of their most glorious for a generation. Spurs, without a trophy since 2008 and without a piece of continental silverware since 1984, are the favorites to win the Europa League ahead of their semi-final with Bodo/Glimt.
Tottenham have reserved their best form for that competition. As well as a trophy, victory in the Europa League would send Spurs through to next season’s Champions League. In many ways it would be the ideal outcome, killing two birds with one stone.
Because there is nothing meaningful to play for in the Premier League, Ange Postecoglou will surely shuffle his pack at Anfield. Of course, Tottenham want to avoid the ignominy of finishing 17th (they are one place and one point above that position at present), but every single fan would be content with that if it came alongside Europa League success.
Postecoglou’s personal future probably hinges on the semi-finals and, should Spurs get past Bodo/Glimt, the final. The stakes are high for Tottenham on Thursday, but not so much on Sunday against Liverpool.

A draw would be enough for Liverpool to wrap up the Premier League title this weekend, but there is little chance of Slot’s side targeting a point. The home team will be going all-out for victory at Anfield.
They should get the job done without too much difficulty. Tottenham will want to keep certain players fresh for Thursday’s home leg against Bodo/Glimt. Even if they were at full strength, Spurs would be at risk of being overwhelmed by Liverpool.
Postecoglou’s team have been far too easy to play against this season, as evidenced by their dismal record of 18 defeats in 33 games. Two more losses would make that an unwanted club record in the Premier League era.
Spurs still have a positive goal difference and they have lost numerous games by one goal, but this time there is likely to be a wider margin between the two teams. Liverpool will be keen to sprint over the line rather than stumble beyond it, especially as they have nothing else to focus on following their FA Cup and Champions League eliminations.
Liverpool should therefore win this meeting with Tottenham by at least two goals, as they did when Spurs last visited Anfield in the EFL Cup in February (a 4-0 victory on that occasion). Back the hosts with a -1.5 Asian handicap.
