Everton vs. Manchester City Pick

Back Manchester City to beat Everton this weekend. It will not be easy, but the Premier League champions can get the job done.

Manchester City Must Build on Impressive Crystal Palace Victory

Manchester City found themselves 2-0 down against Crystal Palace midway through the first half of their Premier League game last weekend. Palace then missed a golden chance to go 3-0 up through Ismaila Sarr, before an Ebere Eze ‘goal’ was chalked off by the video assistant referee. City were living dangerously.

At that point it was hard to see how they would get back in the game. But a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick halved the deficit shortly after the half-hour mark, and from that moment on City were sensational. They scored four more goals before the final whistle to win 5-2. It was one of their best performances of what has been, by their high standards, a difficult season.

“I would say we played really good all game. We were 2-0 down and we created a lot and I said at half time we were playing good,” Guardiola told BBC Sport after the match.

“Our momentum was sparked with a free-kick from Kevin and after that we played a really good game considering we were 2-0 down and considering how Crystal Palace have been in the past games. If you see the chances we had we could have scored eight or nine easily. The work ethic and the way we played was really good.”

It was a crucial triumph for City, who would have been up against it in their fight for Champions League soccer had they lost to Palace. Going into the weekend they are fifth, which has now become a qualification berth for Europe’s principal tournament. The job is not done yet, however.

Indeed, City are battling with Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Aston Villa for three spots behind Liverpool and Arsenal. Two of those sides are guaranteed to be disappointed. City must ensure they are not one of them. This has been a tough campaign for Guardiola’s men, but a top-five finish would ensure it is not a disastrous one.

Everton Safe and Look Like a Different Team Under Moyes

Everton do not really have anything to play for in the final few weeks of the season, but it could have been so different. When David Moyes was hired to replace Sean Dyche in January, the Toffees were embroiled in a relegation battle. They were just one point clear of the drop zone back then; fast forward to today and they have a 17-point cushion.

Everton’s survival will probably be confirmed this weekend, but they are now looking up rather than over their shoulder. Currently 13th, Moyes will hope to nudge Everton up into 11th, which is currently five points away. Whatever happens from here, the club at least knows it will be a Premier League team in 2025/26.

The focus now is on saying an appropriate farewell to Goodison Park. One of the Premier League’s most endearing stadiums, Goodison has been Everton’s home since 1892. But ahead of a move to a new ground next term, the Toffees will only play three more times at their long-time home.

Everton lost their first game under Moyes, a 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa, but since then they are unbeaten at Goodison. Thanks in large part to the Scot, Everton have made their home ground a fortress again. Even Liverpool, the Premier League champions-elect, failed to win across Stanley Park.

However, Everton have not had much joy against Manchester City in recent years. City have won each of their last eight trips to Goodison in all competitions, with Everton’s last triumph coming over eight years ago.

Manchester City Will Be Tested by Everton but Should Still Win

Guardiola was particularly pleased with his side’s intensity, aggression and energy against Crystal Palace last time out. It was something Ilkay Gundogan, the most experienced member of the City squad, also mentioned ahead of the meeting with Oliver Glasner’s charges at the Etihad Stadium.

“I feel in a lot of games, maybe we gave a bit too much importance to tactics and didn’t really pay attention much on behaviour of ourselves,” he told TNT Sports.

“Having that determination, desire, aggression. In the last few games, I see a certain change. Sometimes, you maybe drift apart a bit from these things, but I have to say since the international break in March, since we came back, I see an improvement in that area.”

City will need to display those same qualities when they head to Goodison Park. Everton have become difficult to beat under Moyes; no team in the division has lost fewer games in their last 12. The hosts will fight for every loose ball and City will need to match that.

If they can do so, their superior quality - both individually and collectively - should get them over the line. City are still not back to their best, but they were much improved against Palace. A similar showing against Everton should bring Guardiola’s team three more points in their bid for Champions League qualification.
