No prizes have been handed out yet, but Liverpool are in a fantastic position as the business end of the season gets ever closer. In the past few days Arne Slot’s side booked their place in the EFL Cup final and the fifth round of the FA Cup. By finishing top of the Champions League league phase last month, Liverpool bypassed the play-offs and advanced directly to the last 16.
Things are going even better in the Premier League. A top-four finish was the target before a ball had been kicked in 2024/25. After Jurgen Klopp’s nine-year tenure, it was widely expected that Slot would take at least a season to bed in. Instead, Liverpool have a six-point lead at the summit of the standings in the second week of February.
The Reds have the chance to extend their advantage over Arsenal, their closest challengers, to nine points on Wednesday. This match was originally scheduled for early December, but adverse weather conditions in the northwest of England forced its postponement. Liverpool have had a game in hand on the chasing pack ever since.
Arsenal have shown themselves to be dogged contenders in recent weeks. They have gone 14 games unbeaten in the Premier League, a run which includes an impressive 5-1 thrashing of Manchester City the weekend before last.
However, they have not been able to meaningfully close the gap to Liverpool in that time. If the Reds were to move further clear of Arsenal by winning the Merseyside derby, it would be a psychological blow to Mikel Arteta’s team.

By firing Sean Dyche and rehiring David Moyes in January, Everton took a slight risk. They were not pulling up any trees under Dyche, but his track record of keeping teams in the Premier League was a mark in his favor. And despite the ‘new manager bounce’ cliche, there is no guarantee that making a change in the dugout will lead to an uptick in form.
On this occasion, though, the decision-makers at Goodison Park have been utterly vindicated. Everton lost 1-0 to Aston Villa in the first game of Moyes’ second spell in charge of the club, but a subsequent three-game winning streak saw the Toffees pull clear of the bottom three. Everton now have a handsome nine-point buffer above the relegation zone.
The job is not done yet and a man of Moyes’ experience knows that things can change quickly in the world of soccer. But the sportsbooks now rate Everton’s relegation chances as extremely slim. The Toffees will almost certainly still be in the Premier League for the 2025/26 campaign.
The principal criticism of Dyche was his excessive caution. Everton’s defensive numbers were actually pretty good under the former Burnley boss, but they did not show enough ambition in offense.
Moyes has traditionally been regarded as a defense-minded manager too, but he has let Everton off the leash since returning to the club. Indeed, in those three Premier League victories Moyes’ team scored eight goals - as many as they had managed in Dyche’s final 12 matches at the helm.

Goodison Park is a special stadium. Opened in 1892, it has long shown signs of its age. Everton fans happily admit that their ground is somewhat ramshackle. But despite that (or rather because of it), Goodison creates one of the most raucous atmospheres in the Premier League, especially for a big game under the floodlights like this one.
Everton will move to a shiny new stadium at the end of this season. The relocation makes sense and most supporters are backing it, while also being sad to leave Goodison behind. Liverpool’s visit on Wednesday will be the last Merseyside derby at the famous old arena before its demolition.
Slot’s side should expect a tough game. Not only are Everton on the up under Moyes, but the home fans will also be desperate to see their team get one over on the enemy for the last time at Goodison. Liverpool are patently the superior soccer side overall, but they will be put under pressure for parts of this match.
Still, there is considerable experience within the Reds’ ranks and they should be able to handle the atmosphere. In fact, many of their players will relish it. Liverpool are flying this season and the chance to move nine points clear in top spot is a strong incentive. Bear in mind, too, that they have only lost one away game in domestic competitions this term.
We expect Slot’s team to get the job done, but they are unlikely to do so by a wide margin as Everton fight for every loose ball and aim to make life as difficult as possible for their more illustrious neighbours. Back Liverpool to win this one by one goal.
