Liverpool Happy to Fly Under Radar as Slot Continues Fine Start

Liverpool are top of the Premier League heading into this weekend’s round of fixtures, after which comes the October international break. Yet the best online sportsbooks only have them down as the third-favorites to win the title, behind Arsenal and Manchester City.

That feels like an accurate assessment of where Liverpool are at. Make no mistake, they have made a positive start to the season. The Reds remain unbeaten and have only dropped three points from a possible maximum of 18. A 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend saw them climb above City in the standings.

Arne Slot has made a fine start to life on Merseyside. Replacing Jurgen Klopp was never going to be easy, but Slot has made it look that way. The Dutchman has his own ideas of how soccer should be played and he has introduced some of them. Crucially, though, he has built on the foundations laid by Klopp rather than ripping them up.

You could argue that the fixture list has been kind to Liverpool so far. Manchester United are the only big-six side they have faced up to now - and everyone knows how mediocre Erik ten Hag’s team have been. Liverpool’s other games were against Ipswich Town, Brentford, Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Wolves, none of whom are expected to challenge for Europe in 2024/25.

Yet you can only beat what is in front of you and Liverpool have done that, with the exception of a shock 1-0 defeat by Forest. They have played some thrilling soccer at times, while on other occasions (such as the triumph over Wolves) they have had to dig in and grind out a result. The title may ultimately be out of reach, but Liverpool are in the conversation for now.

Crystal Palace Struggling to Find Form Despite Quality in Squad

Crystal Palace ended last season in magnificent form, taking 19 points from the last 21 available. Once the squad had got to grips with Oliver Glasner’s methods, hardly anyone could stop Palace. They thrashed Manchester United 4-0 and Aston Villa 5-0 in the run-in, as well as beating Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield.

However, the Eagles are in the bottom three as they prepare to welcome Liverpool to Selhurst Park in gameweek six. Glasner’s side have drawn three and lost three of their six games to date, making them one of only five teams in the division yet to win a match in 2024/25.

A 2-1 loss to Everton last time out was particularly painful. Palace led 1-0 and were dominant in the first half at Goodison Park, but a Dwight McNeil double earned Everton a 2-1 win. Glasner’s team have not really played well over a 90-minute period either.

Palace should turn things around at some point and it is notable that the sportsbooks do not rate the Eagles among the favorites for relegation. But unless results pick up soon, Palace will probably have left themselves with too much to do in terms of European qualification.

There is talent within the Palace squad, not least in the form of England internationals like Ebere Eze and Marc Guehi. Yet confidence must have taken a hit recently and that could be a factor when Liverpool head to the capital.

Liverpool Can Pick up Another Victory at Selhurst Park

In one of the most famous Premier League fixtures of all time, Liverpool saw their title dreams crumble at Selhurst Park in May 2014. The Reds, who were competing for the championship with Manchester City, stormed into a 3-0 lead against Crystal Palace to keep the pressure on their title rivals.

However, Tony Pulis’ Palace mounted a stunning comeback late on, scoring three times in the final 11 minutes to draw 3-3 and in effect end Liverpool’s title hopes. The Reds still had not recovered by the time of their next visit to south London in November 2014, when Palace ran out 3-1 winners.

Since then, however, the Eagles have not beaten Liverpool on home turf. Selhurst Park has been a happy hunting ground for Liverpool over the last decade and we like the chances of Arne Slot’s side emerging victorious in the first game of the Premier League weekend.

Palace have been mediocre at best so far this season, but they have not yet been thrashed by anyone. Indeed, two of their three defeats were by a one-goal margin, while Glasner’s team could consider themselves unfortunate to lose 2-0 to West Ham United in August.

Liverpool had to work hard to get past Wolves last time out and we can envisage a similar sort of game here. Slot’s side should ultimately prove too strong for their hosts, but they are unlikely to blow Palace away or triumph by a substantial margin.
