Chelsea vs. Tottenham Hotspur Pick

Back Chelsea to win by one goal. Neither team is in a great position, but the Blues should edge this one.

Chelsea at Risk of Missing Out on Champions League Again

It all started so promisingly. Despite another chaotic summer of transfer activity, Chelsea began the Premier League season strongly. Enzo Maresca quickly decided which players were of use to him and which were not, before introducing a model of play that gave Chelsea structure in and out of possession. By mid-December, the Blues were within touching distance of top spot.

Things have not gone quite so well since then. Chelsea have dropped down to fourth, but the gap between them and first place now stands at 21 points. Rather than competing in a title race, Chelsea are up against it in their bid to qualify for the Champions League, for which a top-five finish is required.

Maresca is no longer so popular among the Stamford Bridge faithful. His style of play brought positive results early on, but the Italian’s approach has been criticised as formulaic and predictable. Chelsea have certainly lacked a cutting edge in the final third of late, with Maresca’s detractors accusing him of stifling individual flair and spontaneity.

This is starting to look like a bad fit. Unlike fans of Tottenham Hotspur among others, Chelsea supporters have never been bothered about style. They are also suspicious of five-year plans; theirs is a fan base that wants to win yesterday. Right now, though, Maresca is talking about the sanctity of his system and the club’s owners are excusing poor results by pointing to their long-term vision.

Perhaps this is just a temporary stumble. Maresca, to be fair to him, is still in his first season at the helm. He is arguably a victim of his early success too. No one really expected Chelsea to be much higher than fourth heading into gameweek 30. Even so, the grumblings from the terraces are growing louder and that invariably bodes ill for the manager.

Tottenham Hotspur Have Placed All Eggs in European Basket

Tottenham Hotspur finished fifth last term. A repeat of that feat in 2024/25 would return them to the Champions League, but with nine matches remaining Spurs are 14 points shy of that target. Without a shadow of a doubt, the north Londoners have gone backwards this season.

Ange Postecoglou has pointed to an injury crisis in mitigation. He has a point. Tottenham have been particularly hard hit by absences. Yet at least some of the injuries their players have suffered must be down to Postecoglou’s high-octane style of play. Moreover, the manager has not done enough to adapt when key players have been missing.

Tottenham’s season now comes down to the Europa League. They were eliminated from the FA Cup in the fourth round and from the EFL Cup in the semi-finals. That leaves only one last chance of a trophy. Winning the Europa League would also send Spurs through to next season’s edition of the Champions League.

Postecoglou’s future may well depend on how his team fare on the continent. A quarter-final tie against Eintracht Frankfurt will not be easy. If Spurs were to go out in the last eight, Postecoglou would surely be on the brink of the sack given how badly his team have fared in the Premier League.

Spurs might be focusing on Europe, but they cannot afford to completely neglect their remaining domestic matches - especially London derbies like this one. Chelsea and Tottenham share a rivalry, so Postecoglou would bolster his position by masterminding an away win on Thursday. The problem is, he has lost all three games against Chelsea as Tottenham manager.

Who Will Triumph When Chelsea Host Tottenham Hotspur?

The year 2025 has not been too kind to Chelsea or Tottenham so far. In the Premier League table covering results since January 1, Chelsea rank 14th and Tottenham sit 16th. That does not make for pretty reading for either Maresca or Postecoglou.

Chelsea’s soccer has often been uninspiring. In their most recent outing, for instance, they barely carried a threat away to Arsenal. But their home form has been decent, with wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United, Southampton and Leicester City since the turn of the year.

That is not the toughest set of opponents, but it should give Chelsea fans cause for a degree of optimism ahead of Tottenham’s visit. Spurs just cannot seem to get going in the league and their openness without the ball could come back to bite them at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are not firing on all cylinders right now, however, so it is difficult to see them running riot against Tottenham. This is a meeting between two teams low on confidence and that is likely to be evident throughout the 90 minutes. Overall, Chelsea should come out on top - but perhaps by a narrow one-goal margin.
