Graham Potter inherited a potentially difficult situation when he took charge of Chelsea in early September. His predecessor Thomas Tuchel retained the backing of the club’s fans right up until his sacking, which came as a surprise. Potter was welcomed by the Stamford Bridge faithful, but the enduring popularity of Tuchel could have led to a tough reception for the ex-Brighton & Hove Albion boss if initial results were disappointing.
Potter also took the reins after the summer transfer window had closed, meaning he was not able to have any input into the composition of the squad. And with the 2022 World Cup necessitating a packed schedule until the middle of November, Potter had little opportunity to work with his players on the training pitch on much more than match preparation.
Taking all that into account, the 47-year-old has had an excellent start to his tenure as Chelsea's head coach. None of his seven games in the dugout have ended in defeat. Back-to-back victories over AC Milan have seen the Blues take control of their Champions League group.
In the Premier League, Chelsea have climbed into the top four by taking 10 points from the last 12 available. A 0-0 draw on Wednesday ended a three-game winning streak in which Potter’s side got the better of Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Aston Villa. Chelsea have not conceded a goal in their last 353 minutes of top-flight action.
Saturday’s match is the first major test the new Blues boss will face in the Premier League, though, having not yet locked horns with a fellow top-six side since his arrival in west London. It will be fascinating to see what Potter has up his sleeve for the visit of Manchester United.
United will arrive in west London with renewed confidence after the midweek fixtures. That might not have been the case had they not had a game on Wednesday. Before that, United were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw with Newcastle United, three days before which they needed a goal deep into second-half stoppage time to beat Cypriot minnows Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League.
But such was the nature of their display against Tottenham Hotspur last time out, United will be full of belief this weekend. A 2-0 triumph over Spurs featured perhaps the best all-round performance of the Erik ten Hag era to date.
The hosts dominated from minute one to 90 at Old Trafford, as goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes moved United to within a point of their upcoming opponents. The Red Devils are now in the position where they would move into the top four for the first time since February with a win at Stamford Bridge.
The only sour note to come out of the defeat of Spurs was Cristiano Ronaldo’s show of dissent. An unused substitute, the Portugal international walked down the tunnel before the final whistle and reportedly left the stadium before his teammates had returned to the locker room.
Results are king in soccer, though, and as long as United continue to win matches Ten Hag will retain the backing of the fans for his handling of a delicate situation. Indeed, Ronaldo attracted the brunt of the criticism following his antics on Wednesday, not his manager.
On a television broadcast before Chelsea’s game at Brentford on Wednesday, the two opposing managers were given a chance to ask the other a question.
Thomas Frank inquired about Potter’s penchant for regularly chopping and changing formations, to which the Chelsea coach replied that the principles underpinning the system are always more important than the precise arrangement of the players on the pitch.
It was a fascinating insight into Potter’s philosophy, which previously made Brighton one of the most entertaining teams to watch in the Premier League. And despite question marks over whether he is a big enough personality to manage a club of Chelsea’s size, the players at Stamford Bridge appear to have bought into Potter’s methods.
We will probably see United play on the counter-attack here, just as they did in victories over Liverpool and Arsenal. Both of those wins came at Old Trafford, though, and it will be interesting to see whether United are able to be as effective on the break away from home. Chelsea will look to impose themselves on the visitors, who must be wary of sinking too deep and ceding possession too readily.
This game could go either way, but we fancy Potter to claim a first major Premier League scalp since he joined Chelsea. The best online sportsbooks make the Blues the favorites and we agree with their assessment - go for a home win in this one.
