Liverpool in Pole Position to Win the Premier League Title

Liverpool maintained their seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League table at the weekend. Arsenal put pressure on Arne Slot’s side by beating Leicester City 2-0 on Saturday thanks to an unlikely brace from Mikel Merino. It was up to Liverpool to respond and that is what they did, running out 2-1 winners against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It was a strange game. Liverpool led 2-0 at the interval, but the first goal was bundled home by Luis Diaz and the second came from a controversially awarded penalty. In the second period, Liverpool looked like the relegation candidates, not Wolves. The visitors were much the better team, pulling one back from Matheus Cunha and creating chances to equalize.

In the end Liverpool held on for all three points, but their performance was not at all convincing. The crowd’s nerves were to be expected, but the players also looked unsettled in the second half. Remarkably, Liverpool did not manage a single shot on goal after the interval, despite the fact they were at home to the 17th-best team in the division.

They are still getting results, but Liverpool have not been at their absolute best in recent weeks. They lost away games to PSV and Plymouth Argyle in the Champions League and FA Cup respectively, while Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Everton in last week’s Merseyside derby.

The exception was a 4-0 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup, but that result probably said more about their depleted opponents than it did Liverpool. In terms of all-round performances, Slot’s team have not been as dominant of late.

“For the first time this season, it looked like we were thinking: ‘Oh’,” Slot told the media after the Wolves game. “That’s why these wins are probably more important than when you outplay Tottenham like we did here two weeks ago for 4-0. We need to show the same mentality this week [against Aston Villa] but play better on the ball.”

Inconsistent Aston Villa Have Work to Do in Top-Five Push

It looks like the Premier League will be awarded an additional Champions League qualification berth this season, which means five English teams will participate in next season’s edition of Europe’s premier tournament. That is good news for teams like Aston Villa.

Unai Emery’s side finished fourth last term to qualify for the 2024/25 Champions League. They have - quite rightly - taken the competition seriously. A top-eight finish in the league phase sent them directly through to the round of 16, where they will probably face either Atalanta or Borussia Dortmund. Both teams are beatable.

Villa have not been as consistent domestically, though. To an extent that is understandable. What is the point in prioritising Champions League qualification over actually attempting to go deep in said competition? Still, Emery’s men have a fight on their hands to finish in the top five of the Premier League.

After a disappointing 1-1 draw with 10-man Ipswich Town on Saturday, Villa are ninth in the standings. A five-point gap to fifth is eminently surmountable, but only if the Villans put a strong set of results together. Needless to say, a victory over Liverpool would be most welcome.

“We must keep going now,” Emery said after the draw with Ipswich, a match he felt his side deserved to win. “We are playing on Wednesday against Liverpool. Of course, we lost some opportunities but we must be consistent in how we react and how we can reduce the difference in the table we have.”

Liverpool Can Take Another Step Closer to the Title This Week

Even the very best teams go through sticky patches during a season, so there is no need to go overboard on Liverpool’s recent performances. Crucially, they are still managing to pick up points in the Premier League, holding Arsenal at arm’s length.

No one of a Liverpool persuasion would mind if their team ground out a 1-0 win against Aston Villa on Wednesday. Champions cannot triumph 5-0 every week. The ability to get results when you are not playing well is one of the marks of a good team.

Aston Villa will not make life easy for Liverpool. They are pretty good at home: only three teams in the division have collected more points in front of their own fans than Emery’s side. Villa will be determined to close the gap to the top five.

Even so, we expect Liverpool to come out on top. Villa are nursing a fair few injuries, particularly defensively. Those absences could prove costly against the highest-scoring side in the Premier League.

Liverpool are yet to lose an away game in 2024/25 and the smart money is on the league leaders getting the better of Villa on Wednesday.
