Arsenal Must End Costly Ill-Discipline - Starting on Sunday

See if you can spot the pattern. In three Premier League games this season, Arsenal have had a player sent off - Declan Rice against Brighton & Hove Albion, Leandro Trossard against Manchester City, and William Saliba against Bournemouth.

And in three of their eight top-flight encounters up to now, Arsenal have dropped points - against Brighton, Manchester City, and Bournemouth. A failure to keep 11 men on the pitch is costing Arsenal. They must fix their ill-discipline if they are to finally win a first Premier League title since 2004.

Saliba’s red card last weekend was more forgivable than those shown to Rice and Trossard. It was Trossard’s mistake that put his team-mate in trouble, and Saliba was sent off after the video assistant referee concluded that the center-back had denied Bournemouth striker Evanilson a clear goalscoring opportunity. With their numerical advantage the Cherries went on to win 2-0, condemning Arsenal to their first away league defeat of 2024.

Because a minimum of 90 points seems to be required to win the title these days, contenders cannot afford to draw or lose too many games against teams outside the elite like Bournemouth. Arsenal, in fairness, have been pretty reliable in that regard over the last year or so, but they will know better than anyone that there is very little margin for error when you are attempting to dethrone a team as strong as Manchester City.

The Gunners did at least bounce back with a slender 1-0 triumph over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday, but this is easily their biggest game of the week. A timely victory would go some way to help Arteta’s team reassert their credentials. A defeat, on the other hand, would lead to more questions being asked of Arsenal’s title chances.

Liverpool Aiming to Stay on Top With Statement Win at Arsenal

Is expectation starting to shift at Anfield? It is still too early to give a definitive answer to that question, but if the Reds are still top of the table in a few weeks’ time, their fans will start to believe a Premier League title triumph is possible after all.

Few considered that it would be before a ball had been kicked. The opinion both inside and outside the club was that Arne Slot would need at least one campaign to bed in after replacing Jurgen Klopp, who brought his nine-year tenure on Merseyside to an end in May. A top-four finish was seen as the height of the club’s ambitions this time around.

Yet as mentioned above, it is Liverpool who sit at the summit of the standings heading into the weekend. They maintained their position there by beating Chelsea last time out in what had been billed as their stiffest test of the campaign to date.

Liverpool did not have everything their own way against Enzo Maresca’s men, who were the better team up until the Reds took the lead via a Mohamed Salah penalty. But Slot showed impressive flexibility to enact a counter-attacking approach which paid dividends.

The Dutchman has barely put a foot wrong so far. Yes, Liverpool lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest last month but they have won every other Premier League game, including a trip to arch-rivals Manchester United. The Reds are also going strong in the Champions League and EFL Cup.

An away game against Arsenal is an even sterner examination than a home clash with Chelsea, and it will be fascinating to see how Slot’s charges get on at the Emirates Stadium.

Honors Could Be Even as These Two Heavyweights Go at It

Even after this weekend, there will still be 87 points up for grabs this campaign. Yet if Arsenal were to lose to Liverpool, they would fall seven points behind them. That is not an insubstantial margin even in October.

The pressure is on Arsenal more than Liverpool. They are four points off the top as things stand and have home advantage behind them. What is more, they began the campaign with the aim of winning the title. The same is not true of Liverpool, who earmarked this as a year of transition under new management.

Martin Odegaard is still missing for Arsenal, who may also have to make do without Bukayo Saka. The England international is considered a doubt at the time of writing, but no one would be surprised to see him in the starting XI an hour before kick-off.

Liverpool are not without their own absentees: Alisson Becker will not return from a hamstring injury for a few more weeks, while Diogo Jota limped off against Chelsea last weekend. But it is easier for the Reds to replace Jota than it is for Arsenal to find a comparable alternative to the peerless Saka.

All in all, we can see this one ending up as a draw. Privately at least, neither Arteta nor Slot would grumble about that prospect. Liverpool have been better up to now, but Arsenal are at home. We might not get a winner on Sunday.
