Arsenal Still in Title Race but Little Margin for Error in 2025

We have become accustomed to seeing the Premier League champions accumulate more than 90 points over the last few years, but a more modest tally might be sufficient to claim the prize this time around. Manchester City’s collapse has opened the door to other teams, with Liverpool and Chelsea currently best positioned to finish at the summit of the standings.

Do not write off Arsenal, though. The Gunners finished as runners-up in 2022/23 and 2023/24, missing out on a first championship in two decades by a mere two-point margin last term. They are currently third in the table and have been far from perfect so far, but they remain in the mix at Christmas.

Arsenal have had a mixed time of things in December. A 3-0 victory over Monaco in the Champions League put them on course to qualify automatically for the round of 16, while Mikel Arteta’s men also booked their place in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup. But draws with Fulham and Everton in the Premier League dented their title chances.

Their fellow challengers have not been perfect either, though. Liverpool have also dropped points on more than one occasion this month. Chelsea have been more reliable, yet they had ground to make up after an inconsistent start under Enzo Maresca. Arsenal will hope that their experience of pushing Manchester City all the way in the last two campaigns serves them well.

The 5-1 defeat of Crystal Palace on Saturday showed that Arsenal can still cause their opponents plenty of problems from open play. They had previously gone three league games without scoring from a non-set-piece situation, but Arteta’s team were much more effective in free play at Selhurst Park.

For all that they remain in the race, Arsenal can ill afford many more slip-ups - especially in games like this one.

Ipswich Town Facing an Uphill Battle to Avoid Relegation

Ipswich Town suffered their most comprehensive defeat of the season so far on Saturday, as they went down 4-0 to Newcastle United at Portman Road. Kieran McKenna could have no complaints about the result: Newcastle were superior in all departments from the first whistle until the last.

This was always going to be a tough campaign for Ipswich, who were playing in League One (the third tier of English soccer) as recently as May 2023. Back-to-back promotions saw the Tractor Boys return to the top flight against the odds, and they are now battling to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

It will be tough for McKenna’s men to keep their heads above water. The loss to Newcastle means they will be in the bottom three at Christmas. With 12 points to their name from their first 17 games, they are on course to finish the season with just 27 points, which would surely not be enough to survive.

Ipswich have shown plenty of enthusiasm so far. In terms of overall performances, they have probably been the strongest of the promoted teams (Leicester City have amassed more points but have often been unconvincing). Yet when you watch them play, it is not hard to notice the gulf in class between Ipswich and some of their more established Premier League opponents.

McKenna’s charges were triumphant on their last visit to north London, beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in a surprise result last month. Unusually, they have a better record away than at home this term. Even so, this could be a long evening at the Emirates Stadium for Ipswich.

Arsenal Should Prove Too Strong at Both Ends of the Pitch

Arsenal did not quite manage a clean sheet against Crystal Palace last time out, with Ismaila Sarr on target in the first half. But they remain one of the best defensive teams in the division; Liverpool are the only side with more clean sheets up to now.

Arsenal have a great chance to register another shut-out here. Only Everton and Southampton have scored fewer goals than Ipswich, whose top scorer Liam Delap has not managed to find the back of the net in his last five appearances. Ipswich will not have much of the ball here, so it will be difficult for them to create chances.

Overall, it is hard to look past a home win. Arsenal do not lose many games at the Emirates these days, having been beaten in front of their own fans just once in the Premier League since the start of the calendar year.

Ipswich have lost four of their last five top-flight games and look like they could do with a couple of quality additions in the January transfer market. Before then, expect them to suffer a defeat by Arsenal without scoring. Arteta’s team can boost their title chances in this post-Christmas clash.
