A new episode of Ride the Line with Grant Mitchell and Tanner Kern is now live on all WSN platforms!
Unfortunately, Grant had to miss Monday’s episode because he was under the weather, but Tanner held it down in his absence.
Monday night’s matchup might only represent the start of the journey through the 2023 NFL season for both the Bills and Jets but is in many ways a must-win for both.
For the Jets, it’s the anniversary of 9/11, and being played in their home stadium. It’s also the Jets debut of Aaron Rodgers, who has been penned as the savior of the team and is largely responsible for the team’s spike in Super Bowl odds.
On the other side, Josh Allen and company are approaching the end of their Super Bowl window with this iteration of their roster. They already lost Tremaine Edmunds in free agency and will be without Von Miller to start the year, and Stefon Diggs has voiced his frustration throughout the offseason.
Allen also appears to be less comfortable week-to-week without Brian Daboll, the now-head coach of the New York Giants.
Even though it’s only Week 1, there’s also a chance this game comes back to play a pivotal role in determining which team wins the AFC East. Many consider that division to be the toughest in football, and divisional wins and losses will be of great significance when the final results are tallied.
Both co-hosts agree that the under is a must-play here. The defenses ranked second and fourth in points allowed last year, and 12 of 15 Week 1 matchups have resulted in the under thus far.
Rodgers might be eager to make a strong impression, but he has not thrown for 300 yards in 23 games and finished last year ranked 26th in QBR. Allen, meanwhile, is known to make big mistakes and has his path to the endzone blocked by a menacing Jets defense.
As far as the game side goes, Tanner is leaning towards the Jets. With all of the contextual factors at play plus the team’s brutal early-season schedule, he believes that their season will effectively be over before it even starts if they lose tonight.
Grant’s favorite player prop is Allen Lazard over 36.5 receiving yards. He averaged 53 per game with Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers last year and has built-in chemistry with his QB, which nobody else on the offense can say. He’ll also work against Christian Benford while Garrett Wilson draws Tre’Davious White.
Tanner is in the same boat and likes the over with a Jets receiver, but he’s taking Wilson over 68.5 yards. The reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year already caught a touchdown from Rodgers in the preseason and is clearly the number-one target on the offense. In a matchup that projects to be this close, his speed and playmaking ability could make the ultimate difference.
