Hypernova Megaways is produced by ReelPlay, an Australian software developer formerly known as Chance Interactive. It was released in 2019 and is the first Megaways game produced by ReelPlay.

Part of the appeal of Hypernova Megaways is the game’s cascading reels, which can trigger multiple wins on each spin. It also features a variable number of rows of symbols, between 2 and 7 appearing in each reel. What do these stats mean exactly? Well, let’s dig a little deeper.

Hypernova Megaways has an Return to Player (RTP) rate, of 96.095%. This puts it just a notch above the average figure of 96% for online slots. This means that for every $100 wagered, the game typically pays out $96.095 to players.

RTP isn’t a guarantee of any wins and it doesn’t tell us exactly when a slot is going to pay out. Instead, it tells us the theoretical rate of return we can expect based on the amount of money bet over time. 

I checked another Megaways title from ReelPlay for comparison, Atlantis Megaways, which has an RTP of 96.1%, similar to Hypernova Megaways. It’s great to see that ReelPlay consistently offers games with similar RTPs, but always check the RTP before you start playing, just to be safe.

A volatility rating measures the frequency and size of payouts that you can potentially win in a game. Low volatility slots pay out smaller amounts on a regular basis. Higher volatility slots pay out less frequently, but the wins tend to be much larger. 

Hypernova Megaways has a medium volatility, placing it squarely in the middle in terms of risk. I found that small wins happened frequently while I played, but I was unable to trigger the bonus round during testing, which is where you can win one of the four jackpot prizes.

I do like that there’s a significant increase between the jackpot amounts, ranging from 10x for the bronze jackpot up to a decent 2,000x platinum jackpot.

Hypernova Megaways features several bonus features, including wilds, multipliers, and a bonus round. I personally think that this game has struck the right balance of offering a few exciting features for players without becoming overwhelming or complicated. 

Wild Symbol

The wild symbol shows a picture of an exploding star. This symbol only appears in the horizontal reel on top of the main board. It can substitute for any symbol except the scatter symbol.

Scatter Symbol

The scatter symbol looks like a fiery orb; perhaps it’s a supernova? Landing six or more scatter symbols across the reels will trigger the bonus re-spins round.

Bonus Round

When you’ve triggered the bonus round, your scatter symbols will remain on the board and you’ll receive three free chances to re-spin. For every extra scatter symbol you land, you’ll receive three more re-spins and the new scatter symbol stays fixed in place.

This continues until you’ve run out of re-spins or you’ve filled the board with scatter symbols.

Multipliers

The scatter symbols also contain a random coin prize when they land, up to 100x your bet, or a trophy prize, which can contain a multiplier of up to 2,000x. The trophy multipliers are as follows:

• Bronze 10x

• Silver 50x

• Gold 250x

• Platinum 2,000x

Playing the bonus round could potentially fill the board with multiplier scatter symbols, landing you that top payout of 2,000x.

Hypernova Megaways User Experience

Hypernova Megaways provides a user-friendly and visually appealing game experience. New and experienced players alike will be able to enjoy this game with ease. In my opinion, it’s also a great introduction to the world of Megaways games.

The game is laid out across 6 reels, while the number of rows ranges between 2 and 7. There’s also an additional horizontal row along the top of the board where you can land that valuable wild symbol.

The round play button is set to the right of the screen. Player information runs along the bottom, including your total balance, win amount, and the size of your bet.

All other important information is located behind the three-line menu button in the lower-right corner. This is where you’ll find the paytable with symbols and values and be able to change the game settings, such as the autoplay feature.

One feature I loved about this game is that under the settings menu, you can turn on a feature called “Left Hand Mode," which moves the Play button to the left side of the screen. This is so helpful for lefties like myself who want to use their dominant hand while playing on a tablet or phone screen. I wish more games offered this feature.

The theme is kept fairly simple, with the reels set against an outer space background. The reel symbols are a combination of jewels and card values (9, 10, J, Q, K, and A), which offer a range of payouts.

The game’s jackpots are displayed in the top-left corner, helpfully reminding you of those potential multiplier wins that come into play during the bonus round. 

The sound for this game reminds me of something you might hear playing as the background to a Star Trek movie. It feels suited to the galaxy theme but is not overpowering.

Thematically, I would say a comparable title is NetEnt’s classic Starburst slot. But with the added Megaways feature, Hypernova Megaways is light years ahead of that game (see what I did there?).

My only real criticism of the game is that when you win, it tallies up the amount onscreen, one coin at a time. This is fine for small wins, but it quickly gets tedious to wait for any win higher than a couple of dollars. However, I don’t think it’s enough to detract players from the game.

Hypernova Megaways Final Thoughts

Hypernova Megaways slot game is a perfect combination of simple gameplay, an iconic theme, and nostalgic charm. Although it’s the first Megaways game developed by ReelPlay, it feels like a great match between the format and the provider.

Playing out on 6 reels and up to 7 rows, the game offers an incredible 117,649 paylines. It also features a 96.095% RTP and a medium volatility for a balanced playing experience.

The Bonus Round offers a chance for players to win the top stake of 2,000x. While I wasn’t able to trigger the Bonus Round myself during gameplay, I like that the rules are straightforward and it has the potential to win a big jackpot.

Overall, I consider Hypernova Megaways to be a solid mid-range slot. Not too easy but not too complicated either. Newer players will be able to jump right into this game easily, while experienced players will enjoy the challenge of triggering the bonus game and aiming for that 2,000x jackpot.
