Paris first hosted an Olympic golf competition in 1900, but it was very different to the tournament we will be watching this week.
Back then the field had only 12 players, the format was nine holes, and the winner – the American Margaret Abbot – never even knew she had won the Olympics. She thought she’d won the Paris Championship!
When the sport was reintroduced to the Games at Rio in 2016 the Korean Inbee Park was playing the best golf in the sport and she duly claimed gold.
Three years ago in the delayed Tokyo Games Nelly Korda, whose mother played tennis in the 1988 Olympics, was inspired to end the week on top spot on the podium.
This week promises to be the best Olympics women’s golf event yet. If the crowds are anything like we witnessed last week for the men it should prompt great action.
The stage is set. Who will take the honors this week? Let’s find out.
Year | Medal | Champion and Winning Score |
---|---|---|
2021 | Gold | Nelly Korda (U.S.A.) |
Silver | Mone Inami (Japan) | |
Bronze | Lydia Ko (New Zealand) | |
2016 | Gold | Inbee Park (South Korea) |
Silver | Lydia Ko (New Zealand) | |
Bronze | Shanshan Feng (China) |
Le Golf National will be playing as a par-72 at 6,504 yards
It was designed by Hubert Cheneau and Robert Von Hagge
It has hosted 29 editions of the Open de France and the 2018 Ryder Cup
It has tight fairways, undulations, and fast greens
Lakes and ponds are a key feature, especially on the closing holes
In last week’s men’s event Strokes Gained Approach was a key stat
The World No. 1 won six times in just seven starts earlier this season, a run of consistency that had many making comparisons with Scottie Scheffler in the men’s game. But while he has kicked on, Korda missed her next three cuts, was bitten by a dog, and was T26 when returning to action in the Evian Championship last time out.

The Thai 21-year-old won five times on her home tour, four times on the Ladies European Tour, and owns three wins on the LPGA. The most recent of the latter was in a pairs event last month which was more evidence that she is close to her best after injury wrecked the start of her year. She did, however, miss the cut last time out in Evian.

It’s not long ago that Vu needed persuading by her mother to keep playing when she wanted to quit, and she has more than proved her mom right. She won four times in 2023, including two major championships, and she won again earlier this season.

You might have noted in the boxes above that New Zealand’s Lydia Ko has a 100% medal-winning record in the Olympics and she can maintain that run this week.
In terms of class, she is as good as any among the market leaders, and she is already a winner this season.
But that good form came in January when she also lost out in a playoff.
Both those results came at Florida resort-style courses with lots of water - much like this week in Paris in many ways.
And while she has not been in great form throughout the summer she did open the Evian Championship with a 65 and finish eighth last time out.
Emboldened by that form she can rediscover her Olympic pedigree.
Back her each way with BetMGM offering a very tempting +4000.

Not many players in this week’s field have competitive course experience but Rose Zhang does.
The American was the joint-lowest scorer in the 2022 World Amateur Team Championship at Le Golf National, going sub-70 in three of her four laps of the course.
She’s been a pro for just over one year and her first win came at Liberty National which is a lot like this week’s course in having lots of water and modern contours.
She also landed a second pro win just a couple of months ago and was sixth last time out in Canada.
Scottie Scheffler won gold in the men’s competition and Zhang can complete the Team USA double this week.
Back her each way at +1800 with bet365.

Switzerland’s Albane Valenzuela will feel right at home this week because this very international golfer (she was born in New York City, and brought up in Mexico City and Geneva) has a Mexican father and French mother.
Moreover, she is very experienced in the Olympics, finishing T21 in Rio and T19 in Tokyo.
She is a much more experienced and accomplished golfer than she was then.
Indeed, last year she was right in the mix at the Chevron Championship (a major) before finishing fourth and she was second in Thailand earlier this year.
She’s a good friend of Katie Ledecky, the U.S. swimmer who made Olympic history this week, and Valenzuela was at the swimming venue to see it happen.
Inspired, she can grab a top 10 at +390 with bet365.
