The formality of group play is now over. As expected, the U.S. Women’s National team has dominated the competition. But as the tournament enters the knockout stages, starting with the quarterfinals, all it takes is one bad night or another team having an extremely lucky one.
Team USA is three wins away from winning an unprecedented eighth consecutive gold medal. According to the latest betting odds to win the women’s basketball gold medal, the U.S. has a 95.24% chance of winning gold.
Team USA has dominated the competition since women's basketball became part of the Summer Olympics in the 1976 Games. Of the 11 Games entered (Team USA skipped the 1980 Games in Moscow), Team USA has medaled in each one: nine Gold, one Silver, and one Bronze.
They have won seven consecutive gold medals, haven't lost a game since the 1992 Games in Barcelona (or in any tournament since 2006), and own a record of 7-3 in Olympic competition, with 58 consecutive wins.
However, as basketball has become a global sport in recent years, the U.S. is not the only country producing elite players. Of course, the best of the best play in the WNBA, but many also play for their home country's national team for the Summer Olympics.

With how Team USA has dominated the competition, it is not surprising that they are heavy favorites to win the Gold for an eighth consecutive time. Now that group play is over, the team is three games away from doing so, starting with their quarterfinal matchup with Nigeria.
However, since the odds are so heavily in favor of the U.S., we can’t consider a bet on a market with -2000 odds a ‘best bet.’ Will they win? Probably, but on the off chance they do not, is the chance to win $100 worth putting $2000 on the line?
No. It is not. But betting on the U.S. to win gold is not the only market involving Team USA.
Let's review our best bets for Team USA in women's basketball:
Both ladies have some work to do if they are going to catch the current leader, Belgium’s Emma Meesseman (26.3 ppg, 79 total). After group play, Wilson and Stweart are both averaging 20.3 ppg (61 total).
However, while both could catch her, they’ll work against each other since every basket one makes is one less for the other. Since there is a solid chance Belgium will make it to the gold medal game against the U.S., they will probably not get the benefit of additional games.
However, since there is a real chance both score 20+ per game the rest of the way, either has a shot.

Both have scored 61 points heading into the quarterfinals. The closest player to them is Jackie Young, with 26 total points (8.7 ppg). So, barring injury or some sort of meltdown by both players, the team’s top scorer will be Wilson or Stewart.
If their odds were the same, we’d suggest rolling with Wilson. She is the more dynamic player between the two and is more likely to create scoring opportunities for herself. But since Wilson has minus-money odds, consider putting something down on Stewart.
She is an excellent offensive player who could blow up and lock down the title.

The USWNT team has been a competitive force in the Summer Olympics since the Olympic committee added women's basketball to the Games in 1976. Since then, the USWNT has medaled in every Games the team entered, winning Gold nine times and the Silver (1976) and Bronze (1992) once.
Over the years, the team has accumulated a record in the Olympics of 70-3. Two of the losses came in the '76 Games, the only time the team allowed more points than it scored (-2). The third was during the '92 Games vs. the Commonwealth of Independent States.
That was the last time the UWSNT lost a game during Olympic competition.
While the '96 team contained several players who became WNBA legends, the league was founded in '96 and didn't start playing until '97. So, WNBA players began making up the roster in the 2000 Games.
Since then, the USWNT has gone undefeated in the Olympics, winning the Gold each time.
The following table contains the results for the USWNT in the Summer Olympics since women’s basketball was added in 1976:
Year | Result |
---|---|
1976 | Silver |
1980 | Withdrew |
1984 | Gold |
1988 | Gold |
1992 | Bronze |

Team USA got off to a rough start losing their first three games of pool play before bouncing back to win four in a row. They went on to take down China in the play-in game, 21-13, only to fall to Spain in overtime, 18-16.
However, they were able to bounce back one more time to defeat Canada for the bronze.

The Olympic committee added 3 x 3 competition to the Summer Games in Tokyo (2021), so there isn't much history for the event yet. France was the one team that was competitive vs. the United States during pool play (21-17). Otherwise, the USWNT cruised through the competition in the pool round and beyond.
Belarus did not put up much of a fight in the quarterfinals (21-10). In the semifinals, the USWNT defeated Spain, 21-13.
