Puerto Rico returns to the Olympics for the first time since 2004, and it will try to emulate the performance that put its basketball program on the map. Los Gallos dominated the competition to earn a spot in Paris through the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in San Juan. They will try to beat their sixth-place finish at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

After a disappointing finish at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, Los Gallos took their chance at redemption at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament on home soil in San Juan. They defeated tournament favorites Lithuania in the final, scoring 79 points on 51.7% shooting while holding their opponents to just 68 points on 21.4% from three. A combined 41 points and seven threes from Jose Alvarado and Tremont Waters set the standard for Puerto Rico as they enter the Olympics.

Despite the Bright Stars’ lack of experience, their coaching leadership of Royal Ivey and Luol Deng has created an organized and athletic outfit. While Puerto Rico has used its pace to overcome opponents who outsize them, South Sudan can match them athletically on both ends. The playmaking and scoring provided by Alvardo and Waters must be on point if they hope to win their opening match.
