With a historic win over Team USA on the country’s resume, they’ll hope for victory, and a miracle in the other Group C match to qualify for the next phase.

Puerto Rico was dominated in their last match, scoring just 66 points on 32.9% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range. They lost almost every major statistical battle, like being outrebounded by 31, but maintained their tenacity in forcing 16 turnovers and collecting 12 steals. Despite their struggles, Christopher Ortiz led the way for Puerto Rico in their last match, posting 19 points, six rebounds, and four threes in their loss to Serbia.

Puerto Rico faces an immense challenge against Team USA. They are the top-scoring team in the tournament, have hit the most threes, and are tied with Los Gallos in steals. United States Preview

Instead, Team USA’s depth and talent have overwhelmed their opponents en route to securing their place in the next round. The United States will try to redeem the program’s 2004 loss against its FIBA Americas rivals when they face Puerto Rico on Saturday.

After a 100-101 victory over South Sudan in the pre-Olympic competition, many expected Team USA to struggle again in their Group Phase matchup. Instead, the United States dominated the match, shooting 52.9% while getting 66 points off the bench from their role players. Bam Adebayo was the standout player against South Sudan, who posted 18 points, seven rebounds, two threes, and two blocks in the victory.

Puerto Rico is an athletic and tenacious team that succeeds because of the play of its stellar backcourt. Team USA is expected to try to dominate in the paint, so expect Joel Embiid to get off the DNP-CD list and back onto the court for their final game of the group phase. If Team USA could improve anywhere, they’d try to get Stephen Curry going on offense, as he was just 1/9 from the field in their last game.
