Team USA is the strongest team in Group C and the Olympic tournament. Loaded with talent and proven on the world stage, from players to coaching staff, a podium finish is almost guaranteed for Team USA. Group C isn't the most competitive group on paper, so the USA should find itself atop the group after the tournament's first phase.

Team USA is the most successful basketball team in international competition. They have medaled at every Olympics they've competed in, with 16 being gold. Entering the 2024 Paris Olympics, Team USA has won gold at the last four Summer Games. The expectation for Team USA is for them to win gold again, and with a team led by LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant, it's difficult to see them failing their task.
While finding Team USA at the Olympics is no surprise, their qualifying means differed from their usual run. A disappointment in the history of their national program, Team USA finished fourth in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, losing to Canada in the bronze medal game despite fielding a team of the NBA's brightest stars. Fortunately, they qualified for Paris 2024 by being the second-highest-ranked FIBA Americas team, although only two players from their World Cup roster were retained for the 2024 Olympics.
Team USA was expected to dominate the competition, and they did just that in their blowout victory over Serbia in their first match of the Olympics. Already the tournament’s strongest team, head coach Steve Kerr has reinforced his bench lineup with Kevin Durant to ensure no drop-off in quality through regulation. They now have the opportunity to rewrite the script when they face South Sudan, who almost took a win from them in pre-Olympic competition.

Serbia continues to try to build its history at the Olympic games, especially after successful runs as a constituent republic of Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro. However, as Serbia, the Eagles have two silver medals in five Olympic appearances. Led by the world's top basketball player, Nikola Jokić, a three-time NBA MVP, a podium finish is a severe possibility for the fourth-ranked FIBA nation.
Through the 2023 FIBA World Cup, Serbia secured its place at the 2024 Paris Olympics. They were the second-highest-ranked European team at the 2023 FIBA World Cup after finishing second to eventual champions Germany. While they put on a strong showing behind the contributions of Bogdan Bogdanović and Aleksa Avramović's absence of Nikola Jokić proved too great for the Serbian team to overcome.
Serbia would always have a difficult path when they drew the United States in their first match of Group C. While they fell short by double-digits, it’s not a suggestion that they lack quality. Serbia is expected to bounce back behind the stellar play of Nikola Jokic and one of the tournament’s deepest rosters. Expect an excellent effort in their second game against Puerto Rico, where their quality can be shown.

Assistant Coaches: Luol Deng, Fortune Solomon
South Sudan is the most recently founded national basketball team in FIBA and, thus, the youngest to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics. They have no history in the Olympic Games in basketball, and their team of versatile and athletic players, coached by two NBA veterans, Royal Ivey, and Luol Deng, has made the world notice their quality.
The Bright Stars are one of the tournament’s most intriguing teams. With little history to draw on, South Sudan found their way to the 2024 Paris Olympics by finishing the highest of any African nation at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, defeating Angola in their final tournament match. Their team sports several dual-nationals like Marial Shayok (Canada-South Sudan) and Carlik Jones (USA-South Sudan). Still, they’ve proven themselves with every opportunity against other experienced national basketball programs.
South Sudan showed its quality in its first match against Puerto Rico. Not only did they take down the San Juan Qualifying Tournament winners, but the Bright Stars held their opponents down with their defensive quality. They now have a rematch against pre-Olympic opponents Team USA, who they impressed against in a 100-101 loss, in which point guard Carlik Jones posted a triple-double.

Returning to the Summer Games for the first time since 2004, Puerto Rico aims to shock the world as they did when they competed in Athens. While Los Gallos have never medaled at the Summer Olympics in basketball, they've shown they're a nation that can overcome any obstacle, like in their 92-73 victory over the United States in 2004.
After finishing 12th in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, Puerto Rico was forced to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics through the qualifying tournament held on home soil in San Juan. After defeating tournament favorites Lithuania, Los Gallos booked their spot in Group C, ready to take on the world's basketball giants. As is tradition, Puerto Rico is led by a pair of talented, if not diminutive, guards Jose Alvarado and Tremont Waters. They've made up for the pair's lack of stature, effort, and scoring potential.
Puerto Rico has a mountain to climb after dropping their first game of the tournament to South Sudan. Their only chance of progressing is to win against one of the world’s top squads, Serbia or the United States. The South Sudan defense outmatched Los Gallos, and the outlook isn’t favorable for when they face Serbia in their second match of the tournament. At the least, Jose Alvarado is expected to continue despite suffering an injury in his first game.
