Our Betting Pick for Greece vs. Canada

Canada and Greece are expected to put on one of the most competitive matches of Day One of the Olympic Men’s Basketball Tournament.

It is predicted to be a hard-fought affair between two teams that can run up the scoreboard.

However, given the defensive focus of the match and Canada and Greece’s respective 167.0 and 170.6 points average through their pre-Olympic showings, expect a methodical matchup contested in the halfcourt.

Greece Preview

  • Key Players: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Georgios Papagiannis, Nick Calathes

Greece returns to the Olympics after failing to qualify for three straight Summer Games in London, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo. They had to earn their place in Paris through the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Piraeus, but an 11-point win over Croatia, led by 23 points by Giannis Antetokounmpo, secured their Olympic berth. An experienced side led by one of the world’s top basketball talents, Greece is a dark horse in this tournament.

The standout team through the Piraeus Olympic Qualifying Tournament, Greece, dominated their opponents. Winning by an average of 22.0 points through the qualifying phase, Greece showed they were a cut above their opponents. Their quality showed through in the final, where they hit 12 threes on 37.5% shooting and forced 11 turnovers while committing just three of their own.

Greece and Canada have a history. They faced off in the 2020 Olympic Qualifying Tournament despite both teams failing to reach Tokyo. Like then, Greece has the advantage in the paint, given their offensive quality and organization. However, if Greece can’t limit Canada’s stellar guard play, they could get run out of the gym.

Canada Preview

  • Key Players: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murray, Dillon Brooks

Canada enters their first Olympic basketball competition in 20 years with an opening match against Greece. After winning bronze in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, the Canadians aim for a podium finish behind a roster full of NBA talent. Sporting a basketball golden generation behind the leadership of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jamal Murray, Canada will face a tough test in their first match.

Through three pre-Olympic friendlies, Canada posted a 2-1 record with wins over Puerto Rico and France and a loss to the United States. Their guard play and three-point shooting were notable, while their defense forced 17.6 turnovers per game. Despite being undersized relative to their opponents, Canada showed heart on the glass and were +/-1.6 rebounds in each match.

Canada will pit its stellar perimeter offense against Greece's impressive interior attack. Giannis Antetokounmpo likely won't be contained, but Canada must limit its opponents' offense in the paint. The match is in Canada's favor if they can push the pace. Concerning the defensive end, Greece's frontcourt projects give Canada some issues.
