Germany Preview

  • Key Players: Dennis Schroder, Franz Wagner, Daniel Theis

Germany enters the bronze medal final against Serbia, aiming to come home with the bronze medal. They defeated Serbia in the 2023 FIBA World Cup Final, but they’re now faced with a team led by Nikola Jokic, who recently pushed the United States to their absolute limit. After a disappointing loss to France in the quarterfinal, expect reigning World Cup MVP Dennis Schroder and rising star Franz Wagner to put on their best effort on Saturday.

After starting strong in the first quarter of their quarterfinal match against France, Germany tailed off as the game went on, eventually giving up their lead. Germany couldn’t hold off France in the paint, allowing them to shoot 61.1% from inside the arc despite a strong three-point defense that limited them to 22.2% efficiency. Dennis Schroder was the bright spot for Germany in the loss, posting 18 points, four assists, and three made threes despite shooting 33.3% from the field and 27.3% from deep.

Serbia was incredible through three-quarters of their quarterfinal matchup against the United States, particularly from three-point range. Germany must hold off the Serbian attack from beyond the arc, where six players hit at least one three, and five hit multiple threes. Nikola Jokic will need to be a focus for the German defense, but they can’t lose track of the opponents’ shooters if they hope to claim the bronze medal.

Serbia Preview

  • Key Players: Nikola Jokic, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Vasilije Micic

Serbia was incredible for three-quarters of their previous match against the United States. Despite falling short, Serbia showed they have the quality to compete with the very best despite their eventual loss. When Serbia takes on Germany for the bronze medal, they’ll need to maintain their momentum going into the match and not suffer a drop-off after falling short against the United States.

Serbia started the game solid in their quarterfinal loss to the United States. Leading by as many as 17 points and for 35:12 minutes of the match, Serbia capitulated in the fourth quarter, losing the final period 32-15. Despite Jokic’s shooting struggles, he still led Serbia with 17 points, 11 assists, and five rebounds on 41.2% from the field.

Germany is an uptempo team whose energy needs to be matched if Serbia hopes to leave the Olympics with a medal. Despite their struggles shooting the ball last time out, Germany was capable from three-point range behind the contributions of Schroder, Obst, and Bonga. If Serbia can summon the quality they showed against the United States, expect a dominant showing against their European rivals.
