France head coach Vincent Collet went with an adjusted lineup for a second consecutive match and overcame the odds to find victory. Germany was a difficult matchup, given their versatility on both ends of the court, but it was the French role players who stepped up once again to take down the reigning World Champions. When France plays the United States in the gold medal final, they must play a near-perfect game.

France’s quarterfinal match against Germany was tightly contested. Respectable from three in previous matches, France struggled against the German perimeter defense, going just 6/27 from beyond the arc despite their victory. Despite the lineup change, Victor Wembanyama struggled again, posting just 11 points and seven rebounds in the 4/17 shooting on the night. Fortunately, Guerschon Yabusele and Isaia Cordinier combined for 33 points to make up the difference.

There’s no question about what the United States is capable of. The world’s most dominant basketball power, Team USA, has all-world level talent at every position, evidenced by their 95-point win over Serbia in their last match. Three-point shooting got the United States back in their previous game, so France must lock down the arc on top of finding their offense to earn the upset of the century.

United States Preview

The United States is coming off its greatest test of the Summer Games, coming from behind to steal victory from Serbia in their quarterfinal matchup. Just one win from their fifth consecutive gold medal, expect the United States to be locked in for this matchup. It won’t be easy, though, as they meet their rivals, France, for the second straight Olympic final.

To open their quarterfinal match against Serbia, the United States couldn’t get a grip on the game. They lost the first three quarters by combined points, only overcoming Serbia via a 32-15 fourth quarter. For the Americans, Stephen Curry kept them competitive, posting 36 points, eight rebounds, and nine made threes on the night. Leading scorer Anthony Edwards failed to impact the game, playing just 13 minutes at night.

By switching up their lineup, France succeeded by going with a more mobile group to keep them competitive on the defensive side of the ball. The United States has the advantage in all areas, particularly the paint. Still, they’ll need to be wary of reigning Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert, who hasn’t featured prominently in France’s last two games but is a hard counter to their interior strength. So long as the United States can be competitive from tip-off, expect them to stave off France for another gold medal.
