Our Betting Pick for France vs. Germany

France found some newfound quality in their last match, a win over Canada. While they benched Rudy Gobert, they took advantage of their newfound pace and dominated the paint en route to a semifinal victory. While Germany has defeated France once already in this tournament, the hosts’ passing quality and perimeter-focused attack have inspired new confidence in their quality. Expect Victor Wembanyama to bounce back from a disappointing quarterfinal, given the opportunity to reach a second consecutive gold medal final.

France Preview

  • Key Players: Victor Wembanyama, Evan Fournier, Guerschon Yabusele

Call it luck, home cooking, or pure good fortune, France has once again overcome the odds to find victory—now a win away from the Gold Medal Final. After a dominating first quarter against gold medal top contenders Canada during their quarterfinal matchup, France staved off a massive comeback to earn a draw against Germany in the semifinals. After benching Rudy Gobert and getting little from Victor Wembanyama offensively, France must regroup ahead of a crucial semifinal clash.

France was impressed in their quarterfinal matchup against Canada, winning the first quarter 23-10, which set up the win despite a losing second half. For France, the difference was made at the free throw line, where they converted on 33 free throws to supplement their 20 made field goals and maintain Canada’s foul trouble. In the scoring department, the unexpected trio of Guerschon Yabusele, Isaia Cordonier, and Mathias Lessort combined for 55 points to lead Les Bleus to victory.

When France faces Germany in the semifinal, their second tournament meeting, they’ll need to remedy the issues caused by their Group Phase loss. After committing 21 turnovers in their previous match, France’s focus will be ball security, on top of finding better offensive opportunities. Star big man Rudy Gobert played just three minutes in France’s quarterfinal win against Canada, so his inclusion against Germany will be something to keep an eye on.

Germany Preview

  • Key Players: Dennis Schroder, Franz Wagner, Daniel Theis

The reigning FIBA World Cup Champions have continued their run in world basketball by earning a quarterfinal victory over Greece to keep their Olympic dream alive. Drawing France in the semifinals, a team they defeated in the Group Phase, Germany is optimistic about this matchup. After France adjusted their lineup to beat one of the top contenders for the gold medal, expect Germany to react in kind.

Germany earned a seven-point quarterfinal victory over Greece in their last match. Despite Greece getting off to a hot start, winning the first quarter 21-11, Germany went on to win the following quarters by a +23.0 margin to book their spot in the semifinals. They held Greece to just 27.3% shooting from three, while point guard Dennis Schroder led the way again with 13 points, eight assists, and three made threes on the night.

France moved toward a more mobile lineup to take down Canada in their last match, which Germany should expect in their semifinal matchup. France committed 17 turnovers in their previous game, shooting 32.1% from three-point range. If the hosts decide to go small again, Germany must lean on their defensive pressure to overcome France’s interior strength.
