Our Betting Pick for France vs. Canada

France and Canada are expected to put on one of the most competitive matches of the quarterfinal round. Opposite in their strengths, Canada will pit their terrific guard play against the interior might of France. This projects to be a competitive, back-and-forth affair with Canada as the favorite. Still, we expect France to cover the spread off the strength of their experience even if they ultimately fall short.

France Preview

Hosts France have been one of the most polarizing teams in the Olympic Basketball Tournament. Despite the star power available to them, France squeaked out of the group phase with a 2-1 record and a +2.0 points difference. After dropping their final group phase game, a loss to World Champions Germany, France has a difficult task against the Group A winners Canada.

To say that France struggled in their previous match, a 14-point loss to Germany is an understatement. The host started poorly, losing the first half 27 to 48, which made them fall short despite a late comeback effort. Star forward Victor Wembanyama was a bright spot, posting 14 points, 12 rebounds, and two steals in the loss.

France’s backcourt has been criticized for its lack of production. They will now face a Canadian team that boasts one of the tournament’s best batches of perimeter defenders. They must contend with the highly productive backcourt of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and RJ Barrett, two of the tournament’s most consistent scorers. Still, if France can’t take care of the ball against Canada’s tenacious defenders, they won’t win an up-and-down scoring battle.

Canada Preview

Canada enters this quarterfinal match against France with great confidence. After being assigned to the tournament’s Group of Death, Canada came out undefeated and automatically qualified for the quarterfinals. After an impressive victory over longtime podium contenders Spain, Canada will try to upset hosts France.

In their 88-85 win over Spain last time out, Canada utilized a 14-point lead to stave off a late run by the Spaniards in their desperate attempt to qualify for the next round. Once again, Canada’s defense made the difference, forcing 15 turnovers out of the usually responsible Spain while holding them to 27.8% from three. Backup point guard Andrew Nembhard impressed, posting 18 points, four rebounds, and two threes on 90.0% shooting in 21 minutes off the bench.

Canada will face its biggest test of the tournament when it takes on France. While the hosts are among the bottom third of teams in rebounding, like Canada, there’s no doubting their interior strength behind the contributions of Rudy Gobert and Victor Wembanyama. Canada must step up its game on the glass to advance to the semifinals.
