Canada has been impressive through the group phase due to their talented group of wing players. On the other side of the court, Spain has shown quality despite being 1-1, and now they’re fighting to earn a place in the knockout rounds. Canada has started slowly in both games, and they’ll face difficulties against Spain’s talented frontcourt. While Canada will likely win this game, expect Spain to cover on Friday.

Canada has been one of the Olympic Tournament’s best teams, taking command of Group A from their first match. They currently sit atop Group A after victories against Greece and Australia. With just one match left in the tournament’s “Group of Death,” Canada can secure the best possible finish.
In their last game, Canada won against one of their top Group A competitors, Australia. Despite the Boomers setting the pace from the jump, Canada’s perimeter defense limited them in the second half to force 18 turnovers. Once again, RJ Barrett was the standout performer with 24 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three made threes on 57.1% shooting.
Canada will need to hold off a sharpshooting Spain team if it hopes to go undefeated through the Group Phase. Spain hit 15 threes with 49.4% efficiency in their last game, which was key to their victory. If Canada hopes to find victory, it must contain Spain’s shooting threat and the productive duo of Lorenzo Brown and Santi Aldama.
Key Players: Santi Aldama, Lorenzo Brown, Sergio Llul
Spain rebounded from their opening game loss to Australia with an impressive win over Greece. With their previous win, they’ve allowed themselves a chance to progress out of the Group Phase, but they face a significant test when they face Canada. A second-place finish is still possible for Spain, but that’d only come with a win and a fortunate result from the other members of Group A.
Spain put on a classic performance against Greece last time to earn their first win. They scored 84 points on 47.4% shooting from the field and 38.4% from three, notching 24 assists on their 27 made field goals. Once again, Santi Aldama led the way with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and three threes, and Lorenzo Brown orchestrated their success with seven points and ten assists on the night.
Canada has been one of the tournament’s most impressive teams. While their offense has lacked fluidity, they’ve made up for it with tremendous perimeter defense and a deep roster of contributors. If Spain hopes to win, they must match Canada’s two-way pace and find productivity out of their bench unit, especially with captain Rudy Fernandez’s availability in doubt.
