The matchup between Canada and Australia projects to be the most hard-fought in Group A. Canada, led by the star power of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, showed they can overcome even one of the world's greatest basketball players. On the other hand, the Boomers' team offense undid one of the world's most successful basketball programs in their first match. The winner gains control over Group A.

Teams | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Canada | -5.5 (-125) | -275 | Over 179.5 (-115) |
Australia | +5.5 (+105) | +225 | Under 179.5 (-105) |
Total: Over 179.5 (-105) at bet365
Both Canada and Australia were impressive in their first outings. Neither cleared 179.5 points in their opening matches, but that isn’t expected when the two teams face off on Tuesday. Pace and shooting will be the story of this matchup. While Canada’s perimeter defense gives them the edge, that won’t significantly limit Australia’s inside-out play. Expect a high-scoring matchup between two top-tier teams.

Canada enters this game off a victory over Greece in their first match of the Olympic Tournament. They won the match 86-79, controlling most of the game by overcoming worrisome runs by their Greek opponents. Foul trouble made the match more complex, so Canada will need to tighten up defensively if they hope to take down the Boomers.
When Canada faced Greece in their first game, they struggled on offense, shooting 43.1% from the field and 32.0% from three on eight makes. But it was their defense that won the day. Despite three players fouling out, they held Greece to 39.0% from the field and 28.1% from three. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and RJ Barrett led the way, combining for 44 points, ten assists, and nine rebounds en route to Canada’s first victory of the tournament.
The Boomers will challenge Canada when they face off on Tuesday. Australia opened the tournament on fire, scoring 92 points on 50.7% from the field and 50.0% from three on 12 makes. Their depth of offense is impressive, so Canada’s perimeter defenders - Lu Dort, Dillon Brooks, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander—must control the game’s tempo.
Australia was the most impressive team on Day One of the 2024 Paris Olympics basketball tournament. Taking on longtime world contenders Spain, the Boomers dominated the competition and announced themselves as podium contenders in this tournament. Winning by 12 over the four-time Eurobasket champions, the Boomers have momentum going into their match against Team Canada.
The Boomers were excellent in their opening game. They shot over 50.0% from the field and had five double-digit scorers, with Josh Giddey’s all-around 17-point, eight-rebound, and eight-assist effort leading them to victory. Their inside-out game will be a strength against Canada, whose interior play is a weakness despite their incredible depth.
Australia will need to overcome a very talented Canada team on Tuesday. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the star for Team Canada, but the depth of their production behind RJ Barrett, Dillon Brooks, and Lu Dort is something the Boomers can’t disregard. Containing Canada’s perimeter players will be a priority, but the Boomers must maintain their intensity at the rim.
