Vegas Golden Knights vs Dallas Stars Predictions and Picks

The Vegas Golden Knights will go to battle against the Dallas Stars for the third time this season. The Golden Knights are going for the series sweep against the Stars and won their last matchup 5-4. They scored three third-period goals to come away victorious.

Neither of these teams have clinched playoff spots, but the Stars are much closer to one. They have three games left and need three points. The Golden Knights can only make the playoffs if they win the rest of their games.

The Vegas Golden Knights would not have a chance to make the playoffs if they were playing in the tougher Eastern Conference. However, they are in an easier conference and still have a slight chance of making a run for the Stanley Cup.

The Golden Knights do not have a particularly impressive roster. They have two All-Stars (Jonathan Marchessault and Alex Pietrangelo), but they are not top players. The Knights do, however, have a handful of solid players that they can depend on down the stretch. Those players are Jonathan Marchessault, Chandler Stephenson, Shea Theodore, and Alex Pietrangelo. None of these players have over 65 points, but they fill their roles well.

I cannot talk about the Golden Knights without talking about the goaltending. To put it simply, they struggle in net. All three of their goaltenders, Robin Lehner, Laurent Brossoit, and Logan Thompson, are mediocre at best and will likely be liabilities to the Golden Knights if they make the playoffs.

The Dallas Stars have struggled over the last week but have had some dominant stretches of the season. Those dominant stretches have put them in a spot to likely make the playoffs.

The Stars have a few talented players in center Joe Pavelski and wingers Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz. They all play on the same line and wreak havoc for the Stars. Pavelski can score goals but is not the primary goal scorer in this group. He is more of a passer and has 51 assists. Jason Robertson scores and passes well and has 38 goals and 37 assists, and Roope Hintz can also score and pass. He has 37 goals and 33 assists.

The Stars do not have a great goaltending situation. Jake Oettinger is the starter. Oettinger is a young middle-of-the-pack goalie and allows over 2.5 goals over a game. He will need to step his game up in the playoffs.

The Dallas Stars have a few notable advantages. They are playing at home and have a slightly better roster. They may not be as hungry as the Golden Knights for a win, but their roster will make up for it.

Pick:

Dallas Stars beat Vegas Golden Knights 3-2. Vegas Golden Knights cover, Under 5.5 goals.

Why Might the Vegas Golden Knights Win?

The Vegas Golden Knights are in a must-win situation, but they will only get the win if they are aggressive and avoid drawing penalties.

The Golden Knights shoot over 34 times a game and score over 3.1 goals. They need to continue shooting this game and bring a lot of energy on the ice. If they are aggressive, they will get good shots.

Vegas has a bottom-ten power-play unit, but Dallas does not. The Stars do not have an elite power-play unit, but they are dangerous and covert over 22% of the time. The Golden Knights need to avoid giving the Stars a man advantage. This should not be too difficult, and the Golden Knights only have a little over 600 PIM this season.

Why Might the Dallas Stars Win?

The Dallas Stars are searching for a win that would put them within one point of the playoffs. However, they will only get it if they have stellar goaltender play and strong defense.

Jake Oettinger will likely be in goal for the Stars. He is young and not a top goalie. He needs to play like a top netminder against this high-scoring Golden Knights squad.

The Stars need to play dominant defense against this Golden Knights team that shoots almost 35 times a game. The Golden Knights have shown that they can score, so the Star’s defensemen have to be ready to combat that.

Golden Knights Key Player: (D) Shea Theodore

Shea Theodore is valuable to the Golden Knights. He plays over 23 minutes a game and has 50 points. He is also coming off a two-assist game against the San Jose Sharks.

Theodore needs to lead the defense with Alex Pietrangelo and set up his centers and wingers. He has a lot of responsibility, but it is nothing he cannot handle

Stars Key Player: (G) Jake Oettinger

Jake Oettinger has taken the goaltender reins for the Stars. I will not mention his stats again, but I will say that he needs to play very well for the next few games. If he does, the Stars will enter the playoffs with some momentum.
