The Pittsburgh Penguins are currently ranked fourth in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 15-12-6. After losing 4-2 to the Anaheim Ducks, the Pens will surely want to get their foot back on the gas pedal as they visit Washington in this marquee matchup. In their last ten games, the Pens are 5-4-1. More disappointingly, after going up 2-0 against the Anaheim Ducks the Penguins allowed 4 goals to go home with their heads hanging. It wasn’t all poor for the Pens, they were still able to generate 51% of the shot attempts and 52% of the scoring chances. It was just a poor second period that spelled their doom. Against an incredibly dangerous Capitals offensive line, the Pens can’t afford a lapse in performance if they want to steal a win.
The Washington Capitals are currently sitting first in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 20-9-3. In their last match the Caps took on the Buffalo Sabres and won 4-3 in a shootout. Alexander Ovechkin recorded his 29th goal against the Sabres and extended his scoring streak to fourteen consecutive matches. Unfortunately the Caps were unable to capitalize on four power plays and allowed for two goals during the penalty kill. Against the Penguins, the Capitals will be facing off against a weaker defensive line than they did against the Sabres. The Caps will be hoping to stand strong and prevent a back-and-forth affair if they want to come up with a win against the Pens.
D Kris Letang (lower body) will be a game time decision against the Capitals. W Patric Hornqvist (upper body) returned to training Monday but was in a no-contact jersey. W Dominik Simon (lower body) is on the I.L. and is listed as day-to-day. D Justin Schultz (leg) is on the I.L. and is out indefinitely.
D Christian Djoos (leg) is on the I.L. and is out indefinitely. D Brooks Orpik (knee) is on the I.L. but skated for the first time Wednesday after recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery.
The Penguins are the over (+127) at 3-0-1 in the last four matches while the Capitals are the under (-140) who are 5-0-0 in their last five matches.
