4 Nations Face-Off Predictions and Odds: A Highly Anticipated Rematch for the Championship

  • Team USA will battle it out against Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship

  • Matthew Tkachuk announced his injury is not a major concern and he may return for the finals

  • Connor Hellebuyck is projected to get the start for team USA after resting on Monday

After giving us a thrilling contest earlier in the tournament, team USA and Canada meet up again on Thursday night to battle it out for the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship. Canada may have beaten USA in Expected Goals in their first matchup, but USA’s reigning Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck is capable of neutralizing any offense as he continues to play at a very high level.

4 Nations Face-Off Predictions and Favorites to Win

Canada (+105) at Caesars

Don’t let Canada’s 5-3 win over Finland fool you, they are dealing with serious issues on both sides of the ice as they actually lost in Expected Goals 2.33-4.01. Even though Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon combined for three goals, neither Hart Memorial Trophy winner generated an Expected Goal higher than 0.10. That indicates negative regression is looming large, especially when they are projected to face off against Connor Hellebuyck who is averaging just one Goal Against per game in the tournament.

Speaking of goaltending, that continues to be a thorn in Canada’s side as Jordan Binnington has severely underwhelmed throughout the tournament. Binnington getting the starting nod over Adin Hill certainly raised some eyebrows as the St. Louis goalie is averaging more Goals Against per game and a lower Save Percentage. Should Binnington get the start against team USA in the finals, then Canada will be prone to playing in a high variance contest which hurts their chances of winning the championship.

Who Will Win the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2024-2025?

My Pick - USA (-110) at BetMGM

Even after resting some of their top talent like Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk, team USA still comfortably outscored Sweden in Expected Goals 4.07 to 2.42. Unfortunately for the Americans, they only managed to find the back of the net once in a 2-1 loss. Although the end result did not matter as team USA already clinched a spot in the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship, it was still very encouraging to see how well their offense played while without some of their best playmakers.

Should their offense be able to sustain their high level of play and consistently pressure Canada’s underwhelming goaltending, then team USA will be in a great position to win the championship. Especially if Connor Hellebuyck is able to string together another dominant performance as the heavy betting favorite for the Vezina Trophy award is capable of neutralizing Canada’s top heavy offense. Throughout the year, Hellebuyck is averaging an astonishing 2.07 Goals Against per game and a .925 Save Percentage.
