The Carolina Hurricanes are coming into this game with an overall record of 6-4, as they have some quality wins. They started the season by winning three of their first four games of the season. After a solid start, the Hurricanes lost three consecutive games to quality opponents. Carolina, however, followed that up with three consecutive wins, with their most recent win being a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on the road.
The New York Rangers had an up-and-down start to the season through their first four games. They started with wins over Buffalo and Arizona but losses to Columbus and Nashville. The Rangers showed their potential to dominate on both sides of the ice. They are currently on a five-game win streak, with their most recent win being a 3-2 win at the Winnipeg Jets.
The Hurricanes and the Rangers have a tough history together. New York leads the all-time series over Carolina 93-66-7. The Rangers have won three of the four matchups last season.
The Hurricanes are coming into one of the most explosive offenses in the league. They are ranked sixth in the league in goals per game (3.60) as they rely on speed, breakaways, and quick passing situations. Left-wing Teuvo Teravainen has scored a team-high eight goals this season. Seven players have accumulated at least five assists, with three of them accounting for six.
On the defensive side of the ice, the Hurricanes are among the least efficient teams at saving shots. The Hurricanes are the fourth-worst team in the league in goals allowed per game (3.78), with the worst overall save percentage at .868%. All three of their goalies have a save percentage of .888% or lower.
The Rangers are around the middle of the pack in the league offensively, averaging 3.11 goals per game. They are a team that takes their time to look for an opening at the goal. As a team, they have accumulated 50 assists. What makes them a reliable offense is their availability in score in power play opportunities. They are in second place, only behind the New Jersey Devils, in power play percentage (34.4% on 11 goals).
The Rangers possess an elite defense, as they are loaded with league-leading shot blockers and outstanding goalies. New York is second in the league in goals allowed per game, only behind the Boston Bruins. Defender Jacob Trouba leads the NHL in blocked shots (33), followed by center Nick Bonino (31). Igor Shesterkin (90.5% on saves) continues to be a reliable goalie in his fifth season with the Rangers.
