The New Jersey Devils took a big hit when they lost center Jack Hughes to a shoulder injury. The Devils were 2-5 in games where Hughes didn't start and finish.
This past Saturday, New Jersey fell to the New York Rangers 5-3. Hughes did make his return on the ice for the Devils. Hughes accounted for two points, with one being a goal and one being an assist.
On Wednesday, the Devils go on the road to the Detroit Red Wings in an attempt to get back towards the top of the Easter Conference. The Red Wings are ranked 21st in the league in goals allowed per game (3.35).
Not only is this game a chance for the Devils to regain their consistency for wins, but it will also be a game for Hughes to get back to the All-Star pace he accounted for before getting injured.
There are going to be several great games this Wednesday night. One of the biggest games of the night is also expected to be the toughest defensive matchup will be between the Vancouver Canucks and the Colorado Avalanche.
The Canucks possess the second-ranked scoring defense in the league after the Boston Bruins. Vancouver is allowing an average of 2.42 goals per game. They are not going to allow many opportunities for the Avalanche to score.
The Avalanche are going to keep relying on the momentum of defender Cale Makar, who has accounted for three points each in the last three games.
Forward Nathan MacKinnon has been an efficient player for the Avalanche. He has accounted for two or more points in three of the last four games, but he was scoreless in the 6-3 win at the Dallas Stars. With the Avalanche going against another elite defense, MacKinnon might struggle again.
The final game of the night could be one of the highest-scoring games between the Montreal Canadiens and the Anaheim Ducks.
Both the Canadiens and the Ducks possess talented players who can account for solid shot opportunities and goals. Montreal and Anaheim are both tied for 23rd in the league in goals per game (2.83).
The main difference in this game is the efficiency of the defenses. The Canadiens possess one of the least efficient defenses in the NHL, ranking 26th in goals allowed per game (3.56).
One player who could easily have a big game is Ducks forward Frank Vatrano, who leads the team in points accounted for (17) and goals accounted for (12). With the Canadiens' defense being vulnerable to multiple scores, Vatrano has a chance to help account for more than one score.
