Kicking off Monday's slate of NHL games is the Atlantic Divisional matchup between the Florida Panthers (12-7-1) at the Ottawa Seantors (8-8). This will be the first matchup this season between the divisional rivals.
The Panthers have been up and down through the early portion of the 2023 NHL Season. The Panthers got on a hot start in November by winning six of their first seven games. They have won two of their last three games with a current two-game losing streak.
The Senators have endured a tough schedule through a good portion of the season, mostly in November. It hasn't helped that they were inconsistent against teams in their division. They had a chance to rise in the standings and be near the top of the division, but rarely, did they establish a rhythm. Ottawa did account for a three-game winning streak before losing their most recent game 5-3 to the New York Islanders this past Friday.
This game tonight is a classic battle between a highly efficient offense versus a stout defense. The Panthers' defense ranks seventh in the league in goals allowed per game (2.75). Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky (90.6% on saves) has been incredibly reliable this season.
Ottawa is averaging 3.69 goals per game, which is seventh in the league. They've seen great input from their core leaders in center Tim Stutzle, forward Claude Giroux, and forward Brady Tkachuk.
The Panthers' offense ranks 23rd in goals per game (2.9) and has struggled significantly within the past few games. They have scored nine goals in the last five games with one being five goals against the Edmonton Oilers, who possess one of the worst defenses in the league. Florida has only scored one goal within the last two games.
While the Panthers are the favorites going into this game, the Senators have the momentum and a more productive rhythm.

A rematch of the 2022 Stanley Cup Finals is back on the ice on Monday night. The Tampa Bay Lightning (10-6-5) go on the road to take on the Colorado Avalanche (14-6) in a game that will have the NHL and fans buzzing for days. This will be the first time this season that the two elite teams will meet. Tampa Bay has defeated Colorado in the two regular-season meetings last season.
The Lightning have been on the wrong end of some tough overtime losses this season. Tampa Bay is 1-5 when the games go into overtime. They haven’t been able to account for an overtime win until November 20 with a 5-4 win over the Boston Bruins. Tampa Bay has won four of their last five games.
The Avalanche started the 2023 NHL Season with a 6-0 overall record before losing five of their next seven games. While they are among one of the top teams in the league on both sides of the ice, they have shown they are just as capable of falling into a rut as any other team. Colorado has won six of their last seven games.
Both the Avalanche and the Lighting possess two of the most explosive offenses in the league. They are both led by a set of stars that help maintain some of the deep rosters in the league.
Colorado is ranked third in the league in goals per game (3.75) while Tampa Bay ranks fourth in the league (3.71).
In this matchup of explosive offenses, the winner of this game is going to be determined by who can play more efficiently on defense. The Avalanche have a serious edge over the Lightning on the defensive side of the ice. Colorado ranks 11th in goals allowed per game (2.91) while Tampa Bay ranks 27th in goals allowed per game (3.52).

One of the final games of the night might be the most surprising matchup as the Vegas Golden Knights (14-5-2) go on the road versus the Calgary Flames (8-10-3) as underdogs, according to DraftKings. This will be the first matchup this season between the two Pacific Divisional rivals.
The Golden Knights had one of the hottest starts to the 2023-2024 NHL Season with an 11-0-1 overall record. They didn't get their first loss in the regular period since the 4-2 road loss to the Anaheim Ducks on November 5. Since the 11-0-1 start, the Golden Knights have won only three of their last nine games. The Golden Knights are in a serious slump.
It is not like the Calgary Flames are in a much better situation within the past few weeks. The Flames started the season with a 2-7-1 overall record. They have been able to account for more wins, but they still lack consistency on both sides of the ice. They have lost three of their last five games.
The biggest concern for the Golden Knights is their lack of offensive consistency within the past few weeks. They were among the top-scoring offenses at the beginning of the season, but are now in the middle of the pack in the NHL averaging 3.16 goals per game. The Flames, even at their best, are averaging only 2.95 goals per game. Calgary possesses more reliable role players and defenders.
The Golden Knights are still the more efficient team on the defensive side of the ice. Vegas is ranked third in the league in goals allowed per game (2.38). Their defense is still strong, while the Flames are still at the bottom of the league. Calgary's defense ranks 21st in the league in goals allowed per game (3.36).
While the Golden Knights are struggling, coming into Monday’s matchup versus an underwhelming Flames team is overreacting. This is a game that Vegas could easily rebound in rather than lose.
