The only game of the night is set for an Eastern Conference battle where the winner gets that little hope needed for a final push for a Wild Card spot. The New Jersey Devils (36-33-4) go on the road to take on the Buffalo Sabres (34-34-5) with a Wild Card spot on the line.
This game will be the third and final matchup of the series between the two teams. The Devils have a chance to sweep the Sabres this season, as they won the two games early in the season. New Jersey won game one at home on October 27 with a 5-4 score thanks to a two-goal performance from forward Erik Haula. Just a little under a month later, the Devils defeated the Sabres with a 7-2 score on November 25, that started with four goals in the first period.
The Sabres have had better runs in terms of win streaks in the second half of the season compared to the first half. They had a better chance for a Wild Card spot in the middle of March but encountered a collection of opponents on the road. Buffalo has lost three of the last four games played, with its defense allowing six goals and eight goals in two games. They have allowed an average of 4.5 goals per game.
The Devils were one of the most surprising and hottest teams in the NHL for a good portion of the first half of the season. Their offense was among the most explosive and youngest units in the league, led by center Jack Hughes and forward Jesper Bratt. The offense would slow down significantly, with Hughes injured on two different occasions. The biggest killer of the Devils’ success this season was their lack of efficiency on the defensive side of the ice.
This game has the potential to be another high-scoring matchup in this series. While the Devils are efficient on offense by averaging 3.3 goals per game (10th in the NHL), their defense is completely unreliable as they give up an average of 3.37 goals per game (27th in the NHL). The Sabres can score, but not as much as their Eastern Conference counterparts. Buffalo averages 2.96 goals per game (21st in the league), which makes their defense more efficient (3.03 goals allowed per game, 16th in the league).
Expect this game to be a high-scoring matchup, just like in previous matchups this season.
