In the chase for the postseason, every remaining game is critical. The Washington Capitals (30-24-9), are attempting to make one last effort to boost themselves back into the Eastern Conference Wild Card spots but will need to jump two teams in order to do so. The Edmonton Oilers (39-21-3) have shown they are more than capable of rebounding from an ugly portion of the season and becoming playoff threats. Even at second place in a loaded Pacific Division, the Oilers know they could use complete solidity.
The Oilers will host the Capitals in the final nationally televised game of the night. This is a game that should have great potential for a dominant Oilers win as Edmonton is getting better while Washington is getting worse in some areas.
Offensively, it is no contest with the Oilers possessing an explosive and loaded roster. Edmonton is ranked fifth in the league in goals per game (3.49). Washington, on the other hand, is much slower by design, but it lacks the numerous impact players to make a significant difference. The Capitals only average 2.65 goals per game (29th in the league).
If it were much earlier in the season, the Oilers would be considered one of the worst in the league defensively and the Capitals would be near the top. Things can change dramatically throughout the season. Edmonton is ranked ninth in the league in goals allowed per game (2.84) while Washington has now fallen to 17th in the league in goals allowed per game (3.06).
Look for the Oilers to make their mark in this game much like they did earlier in the season. On November 24 when the Oilers were still trying to find their consistency, Edmonton dominated Washington 5-0.

The biggest game of the night is set for a huge Western Conference battle as the Colorado Avalanche (41-20-5) go on the road to take on the Vancouver Canucks (42-17-7). This game has the potential to be a Western Conference finals preview. Many experts believe the Avalanche would be in this position at the top of their conference but not the Canucks who were still in the development stage.
This game tonight will be the third matchup of the season between these two high-power Western Conference teams. Colorado has defeated Vancouver the tube previous times this season as their offense and defense has made a strong effort to contain a powerful Canucks team.
The Avalanche are coming into this game of a significant disadvantage of a lack of rest. The Avalanche are coming off a back-to-back with tonight's game being the second after a huge 6-2 win over the Calgary Flames last night. The Canucks haven't played a game since this past Saturday with a 5-0 win over the Winnipeg Jets.
Both the Avalanche and the Canucks are among the top teams in the league based on their tremendous efficiency on both sides of the ice. As of last night, the Avalanche are ranked first in the league in goals per game (3.68) while the Canucks are third in the league (3.55). The Canucks have the defensive edge as they allow only an average of 2.67 goals per game (fifth in the league) while the Avalanche give up an average of 3.02 goals per game (15th in the league).
If the Avalanche weren’t coming off a back-to-back, they would be the projected winners tonight as they have proven their value. The Canucks should take this game based on the limited rest that their opponents are getting.
