My Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins (PIT)

The most exciting and projected closest game tonight is set as the Pittsburgh Penguins (23-17-7) go on the road to take on the Minnesota Wild (22-23-5). As the NHL All-Star Break concluded this week, this is one of the last chances for both the Penguins and the Wild to make a push for the playoffs after underperforming in the first half of the season.

This game tonight will be the second matchup between the two teams. The Penguins took care of business on December 18 with a 4-3 score over Minnesota. Pittsburgh started the game on a 3-0 run early in the second period before allowing two goals in the second. The Wild were able to tie it up with 5:33 left in the third period, but Penguins star center Sidney Crosby scored on a power play less than a minute later.

Both Pittsburgh and Minnesota have been playing well on defense through most of the season. Their potential, however, for the postseason has been limited by the poor play of their offense. Both the Wild and the Penguins are tied for 18th in the league in goals per game (2.98).

The Wild have recently fallen from 19th in the league in goals allowed per game (3.3). The Penguins, however, have risen as one of the top defenses in the league by ranking fifth in the league (2.94 goals allowed per game).

This game has the potential to be a low-scoring matchup and has the makings of Pittsburgh getting a win on the road. Pittsburgh hasn’t been great on the road, but Minnesota hasn’t been great at home either.
