Game one matchup between Eastern Conference elites in the Boston Bruins and the Toronto Maple Leafs started with a 5-1 score. This was a game where the defense of the Bruins shut down the dynamic duo of the Maple Leafs in center Auston Matthews and forward William Nylander.
The Bruins had a chance to make a statement on Monday night by taking a 2-0 series lead over the Maple Leafs. Instead, it was Toronto that made a statement in enemy territory by playing much better defensively and taking a 3-2 victory.
Matthews accounted for one goal and two assists. Maple Leafs goalie Ilya Samasonov and the defensive unit had an outstanding game as the goalie accounted for 27 saves on 29 total shots.
Toronto now goes into tonight with a chance to take the series lead with another game in Toronto afterward. That loss by the Bruins in their home arena was a crushing blow as they have now lost the edge to the series. The Maple Leafs head into game three with the momentum as well.
For the Maple Leafs to overwhelm the Bruins again, Toronto needs to win its faceoffs, similar to game two. Toronto won 54.5% of its faceoffs, which shouldn’t be surprising.
What is surprising was the stellar play of the Maple Leafs’ defense being the best unit on the ice. Toronto entered the series with its defense being the worst unit on the ice, statistically.
The Maple Leafs come into the home game with a 1-1 series hold and momentum. If they take this game on Wednesday, it will be a big problem for the Bruins in the first round of the playoffs for a second consecutive season.
