Two teams in modern NFL history have finished the regular season with an undefeated record, the 1972 Miami Dolphins and the 2007 New England Patriots. 

While the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers are firmly the teams in power in the modern NFL, neither has accomplished the historic feat of perfection. However, sportsbooks have published their list of odds for a team to finish the 2024 NFL regular season with an undefeated record.

Kansas City Chiefs (+5500) at FanDuel

The Chiefs have done a lot over the last half-decade and since Patrick Mahomes took over as the starting quarterback—but one thing they haven’t done is achieve regular-season perfection. Mahomes, still only 28 years old, will now only be defined by historic moments and achievements rather than great one-off games. With a defense that ranked second in yards, points, and sacks behind him, he and the Chiefs will be full steam ahead in 2024.

The Niners have the highest floor of any team in the league because of their array of talent at different positions and because of the consistency demonstrated by players in Kyle Shanahan’s system. The defense allowed the fourth-fewest points in the league in 2023, while both Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey finished in the top four in MVP voting. There’s also reason to believe Purdy, 24, will get better even if the team is forced to trade Brandon Aiyuk.

Baltimore Ravens (+9000) at FanDuel

The Ravens likely won’t have the same historic defense they did last year following the losses of several key defensive pieces and coordinator Mike MacDonald. That said, they still have elite personnel in the form of Roquan Smith, Kyle Hamilton, and others, along with two-time MVP Lamar Jackson at quarterback. Combine that with the offseason acquisition of Derrick Henry, and this will likely be the most physical team in football, one that just went 13-4.

Philadelphia Eagles (+10000) at FanDuel

The Eagles went 14-3 in 2022 and were 10-1 after 11 games last year before they capitulated and lost six of their last seven. They rebuilt their secondary and now have a surprisingly young defense, while the offense eased the burden on Jalen Hurts with the signing of Saquon Barkley. The NFC is the easiest of the two conferences and could set Philly up for another Super Bowl run.

The Lions have had a top-five scoring offense each of the last three years and are a middle-of-the-road defense away from being legitimate Super Bowl threats. They added rookie Terrion Arnold and Carlton Davis III to that unit during the summer, bolstering their backend presence after allowing the second-fewest rushing yards per game. Detroit blew a 17-point lead in the NFC Championship Game last year and will be out for revenge this time around.

Houston Texans (+17000) at FanDuel

C.J. Stroud and DeMeco Ryans’ first years in charge went about as well as possible. Stroud put himself in the conversation for one of the five best quarterbacks in the league and will have an even easier time moving the ball with Stefon Diggs and Joe Mixon now at his disposal, while Ryans’s defense was just outside the top 10 in scoring defense and should benefit from more time and training together. It’s a short timeline, but there’s a path to Houston becoming elite.

Miami had the most explosive offense in the NFL and spent big money to make its defense equally competitive, whether it be the acquisitions of Jalen Ramsey, Bradley Chubb, Kendall Fuller, or Jordan Poyer. They will have to do a much better job against other contenders, seeing as they only beat one team with a winning record last year, but they have the ceiling needed to cash this market.

The Niners’ path to perfection hinges on Purdy’s continued development from a player who relies on his talented teammates to one who can carry an offense on his own, similar to the route Tom Brady took during the early years of his career. The San Fran defense is going to be one of the five best in the NFL every year, and the cast of weapons on offense is more than enough to get the job done. They also play nearly all of their tough matchups at home.
