There is an almost unlimited number of ways to bet on the Super Bowl. In addition to the most common ways to bet on football games, there are player props, game props, and novelty props, some of which aren’t seen for any game but the Super Bowl.
With so many options, it’s easy to get overwhelmed or confused. That’s why we want to share how to read betting odds and lines while also explaining the most popular types of Super Bowl bets.
This is the most common type of betting in any sport. A spread is assigned by sportsbooks to every game indicating the margin of victory based on the merit of both teams involved. For example, one team may be favored by 3.5 points, meaning they must win by four points or more for a point spread bet to pay out. Meanwhile, the underdog can win or lose by three points or less and a point spread bet on them will pay out.
By betting against the spread, there are usually reasons to favor either side, which makes things interesting. Here is a video guide for how point spread betting works.
Rather than betting on the winner and loser or the spread, an over/under bet typically refers to the total number of points scored in a game. In other words, will the total points be over or under the value given? Learn more about over/under bets.
A moneyline bet is a simple bet on what team will win the game. There is no point spread to consider; you just have to pick a winner. However, the odds and payout for each team will be different. The favorite will have negative odds, indicating a lower profit if that team wins. Meanwhile, the underdog will have positive odds, indicating a higher payout.
In other words, betting on a favorite is a safer bet but offers fewer returns while betting on underdogs is more lucrative if it pans out but carries more risk. We have a full guide available for betting on the moneyline.
A parlay allows bettors to combine multiple bets into one bet. It carries more risk but provides a higher payout when successful. Rather than making two separate bets, it’s possible to combine those two bets together in a parlay. The profit for winning that parlay will be greater than if you made those two bets separately. However, if one of those two bets loses, the entire parlay loses and you make no profit, even if one of the two bets was accurate.
This can be a little confusing for novice bettors, so we put together a video guide on how to understand parlays.
Prop bets are increasingly popular among sports bettors, especially during the Super Bowl. Rather than betting on the outcome, prop bets cover specific events within the game. For instance, how many passing yards will a quarterback have, or will a certain player score a touchdown in the game?
The number of prop bets available for the Super Bowl is almost endless. If you have any questions, check out our video guide about how to understand prop bets.
Most people tend to stick to point spreads, moneyline, or over/under bets during the Super Bowl. But let’s explore some of the betting opportunities the Super Bowl creates beyond the basics.
For whatever reason, the coin toss is a popular prop bet during the Super Bowl. It’s probably because everybody knows they have a 50/50 chance of winning. Some bettors look for patterns from past Super Bowls, but there is no rhyme or reason to picking heads or tails. Our advice is to have fun with this and don’t bet too much.
Another popular Super Bowl prop bet is the length of the national anthem before the game. Some singers get through the song quickly while others elongate words and take their time. It’s not always easy choosing between the over/under time given for the national anthem. However, take into account who has been given the honor of singing the anthem before the biggest game of the year.
Among the prop bets that are decided after the Super Bowl, the MVP winner is a popular one. Of course, bets are typically placed before the game with odds varying based on the likelihood of certain players winning Super Bowl MVP. The quarterback of the winning team is usually a safe bet, but that’s not always the case. Of course, the MVP is almost always on the winning team, which means it’s hard to pick the MVP correctly if you don’t pick the winning team correctly.
With the Super Bowl being such a huge event with endless possibilities, the last thing you want to do is just roll out of bed and start placing bets. You want to be prepared and plan things out ahead of time. That’s why we have five important tips to keep in mind when betting on the Super Bowl.
While some folks are more comfortable on desktops, a vast majority of bets these days are placed on mobile apps. This is no accident; mobile apps are the most convenient way to place bets, especially during big events like the Super Bowl. It’s easy to flip back and forth between multiple apps on your mobile device in search of favorable bets, odds, and promotions. Just make sure that you have set up accounts well in advance of the Super Bowl and aren’t scrambling to sign up on the day of the game.
Betting odds and point spreads are always subject to change. In the two weeks between the time the Super Bowl matchup is decided and the day of the game, it’s common to see changes. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with having a gut feeling and placing a bet on it well in advance of the game. However, it’s generally a good idea to keep tabs on point spreads, over/under totals, and betting odds because things can change and you might find more favorable bets by waiting.
It’s rarely a good idea to put all of your eggs in one basket. Determine the budget you have for making bets on the Super Bowl and spread that money across multiple bets. If you put your entire nest egg into one bet and lose, you’ll end up with nothing. Diversify the bets you make with some being safer bets and others carrying more risk but a higher payout. Watching the Super Bowl will be more enjoyable if you are tracking multiple bets. There’s also a better chance of coming away with something and not losing your entire budget if you mix and match various bets.
Assuming you plan on making multiple bets during the Super Bowl, make sure you’re exploring the prop bet market. Not everything has to be about what team wins or how many points are scored. By taking a close look at odds, you’ll be able to find value in a variety of categories, including what players will score a touchdown or the total passing, receiving, or rushing yards a specific player will have in the game. There are also prop bets related to the coin toss or the color of the Gatorade dumped on the winning coach that requires no skill or analytics and just makes the Super Bowl experience more fun.
This holds true for all forms of betting, including the Super Bowl. If you can’t be objective and unbiased when making bets, you’re going to leave yourself vulnerable to losses. Every fan should know that the Super Bowl doesn’t always go the way you want it to go. Your favorite team doesn’t always win and your favorite player doesn’t always perform as expected. It’s important to put your fandom aside and stay objective when placing bets. If you’re making a bet based on what you hope happens as a fan, it’s usually not a good idea to make that bet.
