According to Weather.com, the temperature in New Orleans, LA, is projected to be 77 degrees during the day and 55 degrees at night as of Tuesday, Feb. 4. There’s a 24% chance of precipitation and projected winds of 7 mph going South-Southwest.

Sunset is estimated to happen at about 5:44 p.m. local time, just 14 minutes after the Super Bowl is scheduled to kick off.

Alternatively, AccuWeather has projected an “afternoon” temperature of 82 degrees and an “evening” temperature of 68 degrees.

Based on these estimates and using the odds above, the “69.8 to 78.6 F” bet at +200, the second-best odds, has value.

5 Times When the Weather Influenced Super Bowl Odds

The Super Bowl is generally played in areas where there’s either a dome or the area is known for bad weather. However, there are times when the weather does impact the game.

Below are five examples of that.

1. Super Bowl 41: Indianapolis Colts vs. Chicago Bears (2007)

The Colts and Bears squared off in Super Bowl 41 in Miami, Florida, and thanks to some torrential downpours, these teams had to play through it.

Not only was there rain, but wind played a massive factor, too.

In all, the teams had a combined six fumbles and eight turnovers.

The Colts were favored by seven points and won 29-17. They covered the spread, but if not for two interceptions by the Bears and three lost fumbles, they may have been able to keep this closer than 12 points.

2. Super Bowl 14: Los Angeles Rams vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (1980)

Playing in the Rose Bowl, the Rams and Steelers had to combat 30 miles per hour and more winds. The Steelers were favored by 10.5 points, and the total was a mere 36 points.

The Rams held a lead going into the fourth quarter, up 19-17. If this held, it would’ve been a push on the total.

Instead, despite three interceptions from Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw, the Steelers scored two unanswered touchdowns and won the game 31-19.

They ended up not only winning the game but covering the spread.

3. Super Bowl 6: Dallas Cowboys vs. Miami Dolphins (1972)

Playing at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Cowboys and Dolphins likely expected a temperature somewhere in the 60s, as that’s the historical average.

Instead, they got 39 degrees with the wind chill, making it feel like it was in the 20s.

Despite the cold, the Cowboys running game heated up. Duane Thomas, Walt Garrison, Calvin Hill, Mike Ditka, Bob Hayes, Dan Reeves, and Roger Staubach combined for 48 carries for 249 yards and a touchdown.

Staubach also tossed two touchdowns and threw for 119 yards.

The Dolphins offense was stagnant. Quarterback Bob Griese completed just 12 of 23 passes for 134 yards, an interception, and lost a fumble.

Perhaps the Miami-based squad had trouble with the cold?

The Cowboys were favored by six points, and the total was 34. The Cowboys won 24-3, covering with ease.

4. Super Bowl 48: Seattle Seahawks vs. Denver Broncos (2014)

As mentioned, the Super Bowl is typically played indoors, but for Super Bowl 48, the NFL decided to have it outdoors at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Thankfully, the area was spared the big snowstorm that came the next day, but temperatures were still in the high 40s.

It’s unclear if the weather or it being outdoors really impacted anything, but the Broncos were slaughtered 43-8. They didn’t score until the end of the third quarter. They couldn’t do anything offensively.

It’s odd to see a team favored by 2.5 points lose outright by a staggering 35 points. That’s a pretty massive upset.

5. Super Bowl 7: Miami Dolphins vs. Washington Redskins (1973)

The warmest Super Bowl ever recorded was Super Bowl 7 between the Dolphins and Redskins. Playing outside at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Dolphins beat the Redskins 14-7.

The Dolphins were favored by one point, and the total was just 33 points. The Dolphins covered, and the “under” hit.

Hailing from Miami, it’s unlikely weather in the 80s impacted them.

Washington quarterback Billy Kilmer simply couldn’t stop turning the ball over. He had three interceptions and completed just 14 of 28 passes. Their only score came on a special team's fumble return.
