Sunday Night Football Picks Wild Card Round: Clash of the High-Powered Offenses

Published January 10, 2025
4 min read
  • The teams played each other in the first week of the season

  • Tampa won the last matchup 37-20

  • Jayden Daniels and Baker Mayfield were both easily top-10 quarterbacks this season

The Washington Commanders (12-5) are on the road to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10-7) to close out NFL Wild Card weekend on Sunday Night Football.

The Bucs beat the Commanders 37-20 in the first week of the regular season, making it quite fitting that both teams will begin their playoff journeys against one another. Neither team is looked upon favorably in NFL futures odds, but both have high-powered offenses that play an equal part in this being the projected highest-scoring game of the first round of the postseason.

For our picks, we'll use odds from FanDuel Sportsbook. Bet $5 on the Commanders vs Buccaneers Wild Card game and get $200 in bonus bets.

Commanders vs Buccaneers Picks Wild Card Round

Baker Mayfield Over 238.5 Passing Yards (-114) at FanDuel Sportsbook

Mayfield is a gunslinger through and through. He finished third in the NFL with 4,500 passing yards and beat this line in four straight games leading up to the final week of the regular season, and he had 289 yards and four touchdowns in Tampa’s Week 1 encounter with Washington.

The Commanders' secondary is among the worst in the NFL, despite what statistics may say. The Commanders’ opponents attempted the second-fewest passes per game, so any sort of volume and Mayfield should be able to go over a low line.

Jayden Daniels Over 235.5 Passing Yards (-114) at FanDuel Sportsbook

The Buccaneers love to blitz five and sit back in soft coverage. Meanwhile, Jayden Daniels was one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the league and posted the second-highest QBR against blitzing defenses, and he already got a first-hand look at the aggressive defenses of Tampa, Cleveland, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Dallas.

Washington’s running game completely disappeared in recent weeks, while the Bucs ranked 29th in passing yards allowed per game (243.9). Daniels attempted 30+ passes in seven straight weeks leading into Week 18 and should have the power to almost single-handedly decide Washington’s fate on Sunday Night Football.

Jalen McMillan Over 53.5 Receiving Yards at (-114) at FanDuel Sportsbook

This is secretly one of our favorite Commanders vs. Buccaneers player props because of how under the radar it is. McMillan, a rookie, went over this line in four of his final five games and had five catches for 74 yards and a touchdown in Week 18, putting him one yard off of tying a career-high.

Assuming Marshon Lattimore and Mike Evans end up in one of their customary tussles, McMillan will be left to pick on 5-foot-8 rookie Mike Sainristil or a very poor coverage corner in Benjamin St-Juste. Washington’s pass defense, as we mentioned, is porous, and Mayfield has developed a clear rapport with his rookie wideout.

Terry McLaurin Anytime Touchdown Scorer (+120) at FanDuel Sportsbook

It’s (literally) not every day that a player for a franchise that was formed in 1932 sets a single-season record for receiving touchdowns. That’s exactly what McLaurin did over the last 17 games, hauling in 13 scores as the obvious number-one target in Washington’s offense.

The 29-year-old scored at least once in five of his last six games and just tied a season-high with eight receptions and set a new season-high with 12 targets. The Buccaneers’ secondary has proven to be friendly to speedy wide receivers, and McLaurin is as sure-handed as they come in the NFL.
