The Eagles are not looking dangerous these days, and Carson Wentz has played hit or miss football with only one win to show for it, whereas these Ravens seem ready to cover this spread and then eventually take their show to the postseason and prove (finally) they can win big games, too. The Ravens brutalized the Bengals’ rookie quarterback Joe Burrow in Week 5 and easily earned their fourth win by a score of 27-3, yet another practice game for quarterback Lamar Jackson to get all his gears and targets and playmakers firing in the same direction, which is usually towards the end zone.
Philadelphia only has one win and a tie, and QB Carson Wentz threw two picks in their close loss to the Steeler marring an otherwise decent outing, and these Eagles find themselves on shaky ground in Week 6 having to face a franchise like Baltimore who has all their ducks (and Ravens) in a wine-producing row.
These two cross-conference rivals have met each other just 5 times before, with the Philadelphia Eagles winning 2 of those games and the Baltimore Ravens winning 2 games, as well, with one tie.
The Baltimore Ravens offense is built around QB Lamar Jackson’s ability to run with the ball, throw it accurately, and then fool the defense into thinking he is going to one or the other of those or else give it to one of his powerful running backs.
Tough to game plan around all those options, which is why Jackson and his offense averaged almost 30 points per game, a tough number for most opponents to outscore in just four quarters.
Jackson’s numbers so far this season are impressive – 86 completions for 949 yards and 9 touchdowns with just 2 interceptions plus 238 yards on the ground and one more touchdown, a production that will take them to the playoffs if he can sustain it through all 16 games.
Only the Browns and Patriots have a better rushing attack than the Ravens at this point in the season, so the Eagles have to figure out a way to keep Baltimore’s QB Lamar Jackson in the pocket and Mark Ingram, JK Dobbins, and Gus Edwards from finding holes.
Easier said than done for a Philadelphia defense that ranks in the middle of the field in stopping the run, allowing opponents to average 114.2 yards on the ground per game.
Given that the Ravens average 161 yards of rushing a game, it’s a pretty big ask to neutralize that, but if the Eagles expect to win this one they have to do their best to make that happen.
Part of what makes the Ravens successful is their ability to stuff the run, keeping their opponents to just 92 yards on the ground per game, ranked fifth in the National Football League right now in that category.
Linebacker Matt Judon is a key to that, so far with15 tackles, 3 of those for a loss, plus 2 sacks, 8 quarterback hits and 1 pass defended, all in just the five games played so far this season.
Judon is playing in his fifth NFL season and has become a team leader, especially on the defensive side of the ball, so expect to hear his name called a lot against this Eagles team that loves to try and pick apart the middle of the field.
Philadelphia starts tight end Zach Ertz needs to step up his production if his Eagles are going to think about taking this Ravens game all the way to the fourth quarter and even a win.
Ertz caught just one ball off 6 targets in the Week 5 loss to the Steelers, who are known for neutralizing tight ends and other opposing receivers, so he needs to figure out how to catch more of those when targeted, which he typically does.
Ertz is elite so the expectation on him is extremely high, and chances are he is his own worst critic and will figure out a way for him and Wentz to bring their A-games to this Week 6 matchup with the visiting Baltimore.
