After watching the Rams take apart the Bears last week, expect Stafford and McVay to concoct a way to cover this ‘minor’ spread.
Up until this season, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay had everything he needed to win except a strong-armed quarterback, and now he has that in Matthew Stafford who led the rams to a Week 1 win, launching a 67-yard touchdown bomb to WR Van Jefferson while star defensive tackle Aaron Donald kept the opposition trembling (as usual).
Also in Week 1, the Indianapolis Colts got thrashed by the Seattle Seahawks by almost two touchdowns, the result of a poor defensive effort, although new team quarterback Carson Wentz the veteran posted decent numbers, with 25 completions for 251 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions despite getting sacked three times.
These two cross-conference rivals have met up with each other 45 other times, with the Indianapolis Colts winning 23 of those games and the Los Angeles Rams winning 20 games along with two ties.
The Rams are fortunate to have arguably the best player in the NFL, defensive tackle Aaron Donald, the 30-year old 3x NFL Defensive Player of the Year that offensive linemen dread facing who makes opposing quarterbacks fear for their life.
The 6’1” 280 pound 8-year NFL veteran has Hall of Fame-worthy numbers, with 86.5 total sacks, 202 quarterback hits, 19 forced fumbles, and 360 combined tackles, numbers that put the fear of sack into the best of QBs.
Donald has a never-ending engine that operates at full tilt throughout the game, so Colts’ QB Wentz and his front line had the best game plan against his onslaught because otherwise, it will be an hour’s worth of pain for everyone involved.
The Colts new quarterback Carson Wentz has been playing in the NFL since 2016 and even has a Super Bowl ring that he earned working under offensive coordinator Frank Reich back in 2017.
Now Wentz the injury-prone veteran tosses footballs for the Indianapolis Colts and his head coach is none other than Frank Reich, who purposely rekindled the partnership when it became obvious that his team had a huge hole under center.
With this talented Colts roster, it is up to Wentz to step into the franchise quarterback shoes or else rookie backup Jacob Eason will be more than happy to lend his young quarterbacking skills to that starting role in Indy.
For anyone who has watched veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford in Detroit over the years, it was absolutely refreshing to see him thrive in a new, playmaker-packed environment in Week 1, his skills now being complemented with similar talent from his Los Angeles teammates.
Where the Lions he played for lacked big-time ability (and therefore wins), the Rams Stafford now leads are full of superstars like receivers Robert Woods, Cooper Cupp, Desean Jackson, Van Jefferson, and tight end Tyler Higbee.
Plus Stafford’s Rams pack rushing punch as well, now with veteran Sony Michel and Darrell Henderson in the backfield ready to set up an effective passing game for the second half, all under the crafty offensive game planning of head coach McVay.
Now that the Colts’ number one receiver T.Y. Hilton has been placed on injured reserve with a neck injury, it is time for Indy’s younger receivers to step up, a chance for both Mike Strachan and Michael Pittman Jr. to shine.
In Week 1, the rookie receiver Strachan was targeted twice and caught both passes for 26 yards, his longest a 16 yarder, early consistency as a target that veteran QB Carson Wentz is sure to notice and begin depending on.
Second-year receiver Michael Pittman Jr. caught three passes for almost thirty yards last week after posting 40 receptions for over 500 yards and a touchdown last season, a sign that he could begin to step up this weekend in Indianapolis while injured playmaker Hilton is out.
