The NFL preseason concludes this week
The Steelers are in a quarterback battle
Many starters won’t play in Week 3
The 2024 NFL regular season is right around the corner, but we still have one more slate of preseason contests. Most teams have their starters determined and are trying to fill out their final roster spots.
However, some teams, like the Steelers and Patriots, have still not named a starter. In Week 3, it’s essential to look at these teams from a betting perspective because they should have an advantage over their opponents.

The Steelers were expected to be a contender in the AFC North, but they haven’t delivered in the preseason. Last week, starting quarterback contenders Russell Wilson and Justin Fields played the entire game, and Pittsburgh only scored three points.
This is unacceptable because Pittsburgh was facing backups for a large chunk of the game. The Steelers have a new offensive coordinator in Arthur Smith, but he hasn’t looked great.
Smith prioritizes winning in the trenches, and the offensive line has been the one unit that has looked worse than the quarterbacks. The team scored 15 points in two games but will likely surpass 20.5 points on Saturday.
The Detroit Lions have nothing to play for in the preseason finale. This team knows who is starting and is positioned to win the NFC and potentially the Super Bowl this season.
No starters will play for the Lions, and they will quickly turn into players who are on the roster bubble. If Wilson or Fields is in the game, and they should be for at least a half, Pittsburgh will have starters on the field.
Neither quarterback has thrown the ball well, but Fields has been efficient running the ball. He has carried the ball 11 times for 44 yards in the preseason, and his legs should help Pittsburgh reach 21 points.

The Patriots were built for preseason football. They lost their second game to the Eagles, 14-13, but started exhibition games with a 17-3 victory against Carolina.
New England is so good in the preseason because it has a stacked quarterback room. It starts with veteran Jacoby Brissett, then Drake Maye, Bailey Zappe, and Joe Milton.
All these players are capable of leading touchdown drives, and they have been able to score. New England’s team total is a solid bet this week because they’re in a similar situation to Pittsburgh.
New England is trying to determine if Maye or Brissett will start. The offense has looked best with Maye under center, and he should receive most of the action.
The second portion of the game will be spent trying to see if Zappe will make the team. Zappe has been a solid backup in the NFL the past couple of seasons and should be able to score against the Commanders' backups.
Washington is 0-2 in the preseason, and they have allowed opponents to go over 19.5 points in one of two games.

The Chicago Bears have found their starting quarterback in Caleb Williams. Williams has looked excellent throughout training camp, and the Bears don’t need any more from him in exhibition games.
Chicago is onto Week 1 of the regular season and winning the NFC North. They’re just trying to fill out the backend of their roster. The Bears also know who their backup quarterback will be with Tyson Bagent.
In today’s NFL, the backup quarterback can be just as important as the starter because they’re the next player in the game. When a team doesn’t have a healthy backup, they’re one hit away from losing their season.
Without Williams and limited time from Bagent, we believe the Bears will stay under 16.5 points. They have gone over this line in three games, but we see them keeping their offense vanilla.
Look for Brett Rypien and Austin Reed to get most of the action. Reed hasn’t thrown a single touchdown in the preseason.
