The Patriots and 49ers are both coming off Week 3 losses
San Francisco had a 95% chance to beat the Rams with minutes remaining in the fourth quarter last week
The Patriots are 2-1 ATS and getting 10 points on FanDuel Sportsbook
The New England Patriots will travel to San Francisco on Sunday to face the 49ers. Both teams are desperate for a win following their Week 3 losses, which should make for a competitive game.
The Jets blew out the Patriots on Thursday Night Football, while the 49ers allowed the Rams to battle back from a two-touchdown deficit to win outright. San Francisco is a heavy 10-point favorite on Sunday, the season's largest spread.
However, the biggest favorite in each of the first three weeks of the season has lost outright, so don’t discount the Patriots. We’re targeting a game pick and some props on FanDuel Sportsbook.
New customers on FanDuel Sportsbook can get $200 in bonus bets instantly when they wager $5 on the platform. This is a great way to kick off NFL wagering on FanDuel Sportsbook.
Odds for the Patriots vs 49ers matchup are provided by FanDuel Sportsbook.
Team | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
New England Patriots | +10 (-110) | +420 | Over 39.5 (-110) |
San Francisco 49ers | -10 (-110) | -560 | Under 39.5 (-110) |
The 49ers, who were picked to go to the Super Bowl, have struggled without Christian McCaffrey. However, they should dominate this game. The Patriots can’t stretch the ball down the field and create explosive plays.
Their crutch will be even more prominent against the 49ers, who have one of the best defenses in the NFL. San Francisco has lost two in a row, so their desperation should shine through in this contest.

The Cold, Hard Football Facts proprietary stats rank San Francisco as the 12th-ranked team in the NFL. They should be a top-five statistical team but have underperformed to start the season.
The loss of McCaffrey before the team even played a game was devastating. He is on the IR with a calf and Achilles issue, and his absence shows how critical the running back is to the team.
Jordan Mason has done a solid job filling the void, but he isn’t a game-changer like the former MVP. Even though San Francisco doesn’t have McCaffrey on Sunday, it shouldn’t make any difference against the Patriots.
New England has a solid defense on paper, but they haven’t performed well. The Patriots are 25th in Defensive Real Quarterback Rating, 27th in Defensive Passer Rating, and 14th in Defensive Rusher Rating.
The offensive numbers have been even worse, as the Patriots are 31st in Total Team Yards, 26th in Real Quarterback Rating, and 31st in Real Passing Yards/Attempt. Teams that can’t stretch the ball down the field can’t win in the NFL.
New England should challenge San Francisco on defense, but if the 49ers score 21 points, we don’t believe the Patriots can score more than 10. Their highest point total this season was 20 against the Seahawks, and they’re coming off a three-point performance against the Jets.
Brock Purdy has been fantastic this season for the 49ers. He is frequently criticized, but Purdy has posted tremendous numbers in 2024.
The quarterback is second in passing yards with 842. He has thrown four touchdowns with just one interception and is fourth in QBR (74.4). Purdy’s total is meager against New England, considering the Patriots have been horrendous against the pass.
It could hurt Purdy's stats if San Francisco starts running the ball because they take a quick lead. Yet, based on how San Francisco has played so far, there is no reason to take the under on Purdy’s passing prop.

While Jacoby Brissett isn’t an elite pocket passer, he must surpass his total for New England to have any chance on Sunday. San Francisco has been susceptible to the pass, and we expect them to load the box against the Patriots to eliminate the run.
New England should have some downfield chances if San Francisco takes this approach. Sam Darnold threw for 268 yards in Week 2, and Matthew Stafford hit 221 yards last week. The 49ers are 25th in Defensive Passer Rating, so the secondary could be a good spot for New England to attack.

If Brissett exceeds his total, Hunter Henry should go over his receiving line of 27.5 yards. Henry has been New England’s best possession receiver in 2024.
He has caught 12 passes for 136 yards this season. The bulk of these yards came during a 109-yard performance against the Seahawks. Brissett shouldn’t have much time to throw, and Henry is a great, quick option for the quarterback.
