The Saints have scored 20 points or less in four of their last five games while the Packers have held four of their last five opponents to 20 points or less
New Orleans is likely to be without Derek Carr and Alvin Kamara on Monday night
Week 16 of the NFL season concludes on Monday night when the Green Bay Packers host the New Orleans Saints. On paper, this isn’t the most meaningful or compelling game on the schedule. However, a December game at Lambeau Field is always a special occasion. Plus, last year’s Saints-Packers game was decided by just a single point. Even if it may not be obvious, if you look beneath the surface, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about this game.
With the 10-4 Packers hosting the 5-9 Saints, this game looks like a mismatch on paper. That explains the two-touchdown betting line. Also, most of Green Bay’s recent wins have come by lopsided margins. On the other hand, the Saints have mostly played close games lately, including a heartbreaking one-point loss to the Commanders last week. That makes such a big spread a little surprising. In any event, here are the current odds for Monday’s game.

Team | Spread | Moneyline | Over/Under |
---|---|---|---|
Green Bay Packers | -14 (-115) | -1100 | Over 42.5 (-110) |
New Orleans Saints | +14 (-105) | +700 | Under 42.5 (-110) |
As lopsided as this game looks on paper, the Saints have played a lot of close, low-scoring games recently. The New Orleans defense ranks in the top half of the league in points allowed, so it’s not a given that the Packers will be able to run up the score. Plus, this will be Green Bay’s first home game in December, so the weather conditions may not allow for a high-scoring game. The Saints, in particular, could struggle with Derek Carr likely out again. That makes the under the best bet for this game, although I also lean toward the Saints beating the spread in a game that should be closer than you might think.

There is no doubt that the Packers are on something of a hot streak, at least offensively. They’ve scored at least 30 points in four straight games. Even in a loss to the Lions, the Green Bay offense got rolling and put 31 points on the board. In those four games, Jordan Love has thrown seven touchdown passes and no interceptions despite not throwing for a ton of yards. That efficiency from Love is no doubt a big reason why the Packers are such heavy favorites in this game.
However, the New Orleans defense continues to put up a fight, even with the Saints out of the playoff picture. In five straight games, the Saints have held their opponent to 21 points or less. Even playoff-caliber teams like the Rams and Commanders have struggled to move the ball with ease against the New Orleans defense. If that trend continues, it’ll be difficult for the Packers to cover a 14-point spread.
At the same time, the Saints are likely to struggle offensively on Monday night. While the defense has hung tough, the Saints have been held to 20 points or less in four of their last five games. They are way too reliant on Alvin Kamara, who is the team’s leading rusher and receiver. Kamara is also doubtful to play Monday with a groin injury while quarterback David Carr is doubtful after missing last week with a concussion and a broken non-throwing hand. Those injuries don’t bode well for the New Orleans offense this week.
After all, the Green Bay defense should be capable of slowing down a watered-down New Orleans offense. Obviously, the Packers couldn’t do much to slow down the Lions two weeks ago. But their last four opponents have been held below 20 points, including the Dolphins and Seahawks. While Green Bay’s defense doesn’t always get a ton of credit, the Packers rank in the top 10 in points allowed and look poised for another good game against the Saints on Monday.

For a game in Green Bay this time of the year, running the ball becomes paramount. That means the Packers are likely to lean on Jacobs as much as possible. We saw that last week when Jacobs got 26 carries and rushed for 94 yards. That was the second time in four weeks that Jacobs received 26 carries and rushed for over 90 yards. Jacobs isn’t sharing carries with anyone right now, and as long as the Packers remain in control of this game, he’ll continue to get a heavy workload and have a big game against a New Orleans defense that’s allowed the sixth-most rushing yards in the NFL this season.

If the Packers are leaning on Jacobs, that means they won’t ask Love to carry them with his arm. While he’s capable, the Packers have succeeded with Love doing less, as he’s thrown for less than 230 yards in three of his last four games. If this game plays out as expected, the Packers won’t need to throw the ball that much. The weather conditions may not agree with a lot of downfield passes either. Even if Green Bay wins comfortably, it doesn’t mean Love will have a big game.

If Love is held below 230 passing yards, it’s likely that Reed will struggle to get beyond 40 receiving yards. Officially, Reed is the team’s leading receiver, although he’s not been that involved lately. In a 34-31 loss to the Lions two weeks ago, Reed had no catches. He’s totaled less than 40 passing yards in five straight games. Also, it was September the last time Reed had more than six targets in a game. Just once in the last five games has he caught more than three passes. The bottom line is that Reed isn’t getting enough attention in the Green Bay offense to think that he’ll go beyond 40 yards in a game that’s likely to be dominated by the running game.
