This Week 8 Thursday Night Football NFC showdown features two top-10 defenses going head to head as the 6-1 Green Bay Packers find themselves the underdogs against an undefeated Cardinals team that continues to knock down opponents, but Aaron Rodgers (most likely without WR Davante Adams due to a positive COVID-19 test) could put an end that if Green Bay’s 7th ranked defense can get them back on the field often enough.
The playmakers on this undefeated Arizona Cardinals team – QB Kyler Murray, WRs AJ Green, Christian Kirk, and DeAndre Hopkins, DE JJ Watt, and now TE Zach Ertz – are finding an identity as their 7th ranked offense now averages over 32 points per game, but to outscore Packers’ future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers could be the biggest test of this impressive Arizona squad so far this season.
These two NFC rivals have played each other 75 prior times (including 3 postseason games), with the Arizona Cardinals winning 26 of those games and the Green Bay Packers winning 45 of games plus four ties.

That question has been asked and answered “No” for seven weeks in a row, but few NFL franchises remain undefeated the entire season (remember the Steelers began last season 11-0 but lost quickly in the playoffs), so it is just a matter of time before a first loss happens.
As this Green Bay Packers team slowly figures itself out this season it has won six games in a row, and that’s after the Aaron Rodgers haters and doubters accused them of giving up on the season when they essentially failed to show up in Week 1.
But now they are firing on all cylinders with Rodgers and his consistently excellent targets – Davante Adams (COVID-19, doubtful), Randall Cobb, and TE Marcedes Lewis – are catching balls and finding the end zone more often, but it won’t matter if their defense can’t keep speedy AZ QB Kyler Murray trapped in his own pocket.
One of the main keys to Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray’s success is his ability to scramble outside the pocket and throw on the run from a variety of arm angles while all the time being a serious threat to scramble free for a first down.
This season Murray’s offense is on fire so far with 17 passing touchdowns with just five interceptions, the third-year quarterback completing 73.5 percent of his passes in seven games, production that has kept his team only in the win column so far.
Both Murray and Rodgers have proven they can post four touchdown passes in a game this season, with Rodgers doing that once while Murray has done it twice, so this game could come down to whether each team’s defense is up for the challenge of stopping such prolific passers.
One area that needs to step up its production (especially since WR Adams most likely won’t suit up) is the Packers’ rushing attack, right now ranked at 19th in the league after averaging just over a hundred yards on the ground per game, that team effort led by veteran Aaron Jones.
Now in his fifth NFL season, Jones is a 5’ 9” 208-pound rod of lightning who seems to bolt his way past defenders at will, this season with 89 carries so far for 404 yards (4.5 yds/car) and 2 touchdowns as well as 26 catches for another 186 yards and four more touchdowns through the air.
This double threat from out of the backfield named Jones gives Aaron Rodgers plenty of help with blocking on passing downs, as well, so watch for him to have a big game if the Packers expect to give the Cardinals their first loss of the season.
After spending his first nine NFL seasons with the middling Cincinnati Bengals, this year wide receiver A.J. Green has found himself the star on an undefeated Arizona Cardinals team, fast becoming the favorite target of quarterback Kyler Murray and proving himself as having capable hands and feet.
Green has caught 24 passes off 35 targets so far this season for 406 yards and 3 touchdowns, production that is almost equal to what he posted all of last season, a sign that he is in the right place now for all that talent he brings to the table.
And at 6’ 4” and 207 pounds, Green brings height and strong hands that can go up and fight for the ball above shorter cornerbacks, plus he has the moves and the strength to break tackles for yards after the catch, so watch for him to play a big part in this one.
