What is a Prop Bet?

A prop bet is where you wager on a micro-event happening within the larger event.

In this case, the larger event would be the game—for example, the New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills.

Within that event, prop bets can be made on the game, each team, and single players.

Suppose you’re unsure where to bet on the moneyline, spread, or totals. In that case, this can be an alternative as it still involves the game you’re interested in, but in a different way.

How to Place an NFL Prop Bet Online

The most common bets to make on the NFL and sports, in general, are the money line, point spread, and totals. Making these bets and prop bets are similar, but there is a step or two more to become familiar with to place a prop bet.

Below is a comprehensive step-by-step guide, starting at the very beginning.

  1. Find the online sportsbook you want to play at.

  2. Go to the desktop site or download the mobile app.

  3. Create a new account.

  4. Make your first deposit.

  5. Go to the homepage and find the NFL betting page.

  6. Find the game you want to make prop bets on.

  7. Click on the game to open up a page dedicated solely to the game.

  8. Scan the available betting markets for team, game, or player props.

  9. Find the NFL prop bets you want to make.

  10. Select them and add them to the bet slip.

  11. Input the amount you wish to wager and confirm it.

  12. Wait for the final result and hope for a win.

Most Popular Types of NFL Prop Bets

NFL Player Props

Player prop bets are the most exciting prop bet market to engage with. With fantasy football as popular as it is, many new bettors are already in the mindset of gauging NFL player individual statistics.

Here are the most common types of NFL player prop bets:

  • Passing touchdowns

  • Passing yards

  • Interceptions

  • Longest completion

  • Pass+rush yards

  • Rushing yards

  • Receiving yards

  • Rush+receiving yards

  • Longest rush

  • First touchdown scorer

  • Any time touchdown scorer

  • 2+ touchdowns

  • 3+ touchdowns

  • Last touchdown scorer

  • 1st team touchdown

There could be even more than this, especially as games get closer to the kickoff date. As you can see, there are numerous prop bets available that directly correlate with a fantasy football-like lens.

NFL Team Props

As expected, team props aren’t as robust or plentiful as player props, but there are still several possible bets to make.

  • Total team points

  • Total team touchdowns

  • Total point bands

  • Total points per half

  • Shutout

  • Score 1st & win/loss

  • Half winners

  • Score in both halves

You’ll look at an individual team instead of a single player. This has a lot more to do with the game's final outcome, considering that most of these props have to do with points-based props.

NFL Game Props

With game props, you’ll have to consider each team as these props involve their productivity independently and in combination with one another.

  • Exact final score

  • First score after seven minutes

  • First to score

  • First touchdown on or after 11 minutes

  • First scoring play type

  • Scoring specials

  • Successful two-point conversion

  • Last to score

  • Largest lead

  • Tie after 0-0

  • Safety to occur

  • Race to 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 points

  • Overtime

  • Total punts

These prop bets can be more of a gamble, including the first type of score, whether a safety will happen, or if overtime will happen. It’s difficult to research these props ahead of time, but these should be viewed as “fun props” more often than not. All prop bets are entertainment, but there are fewer informed decisions to be made here than single-player props.

Super Bowl Props

The Super Bowl is one of the most popular sporting events on the planet, and with that, sportsbooks will have prop bets you won’t find any other time of the year. These prop bets are more along the lines of gambling, however.

Here are some examples:

  • Coin toss result

  • Gatorade color

  • Number of times a person's name is mentioned on the broadcast

  • National anthem length

  • Who did the Super Bowl MVP thank first (God, teammate, or family)

  • First penalty flag

These are random. There’s not a lot of data to work with, like player passing yards. Remember, these are equivalent to a slot machine when wagering on them.

What Are the Best NFL Props to Bet On?

When picking or recommending the best NFL prop bets, it’s difficult to give a definitive answer. It’s difficult because every player has their sensibilities when it comes to wagering. Suppose you’re more analytical and want to make informed wagers using data points, single-player. In that case, statistically-driven prop bets are likely more for you because you can examine past performances, defensive schemes, and other advanced statistics.

However, if you’re someone who looks forward to the Super Bowl and wants to bet $5 to $10 on some Super Bowl-based props, that’s OK, too.

For us, single-player props have the most upside of fun and earning a profit. As mentioned, there are a lot of fantasy football elements, so these are more familiar to most players.

When examining these bets, you can use data to make as educated a guess as possible, eliminating other props' complete randomness. Of course, there’s no way to guarantee a win, but if you can make as informed a decision as possible, this should set you up for long-term success.

Best Strategy for Betting NFL Props Online

Project the Game Script and Plan

When examining specific player props, you can leverage the money line, point spread, and totals to help as a starting point.

Let’s use an example of the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jaguars are the home team, are 6.5-point favorites, and the total is 40.

With a 40-point total and a near-touchdown spread, this doesn’t look great for projecting scoring for the Titans.

Therefore, when you look at passing touchdown props for quarterback Joshua Dobbs (he’s starting Week 18), it’s safe to assume, based on the total and spread, that not many touchdowns are likely to occur.

Conversely, you could look at the rushing yard props for the Jaguars and running back Travis Etienne.

If his line is 63.5, you can look at the Jaguars being a home favorite and assume they’ll be running the ball based on how favored they are.

Then, you can look at Etienne’s past performances, carries per game, Titans defense, and more.

Do your best to leverage current betting odds to help predict how the game will go.

Use Multiple Sportsbooks

If there are multiple legal sportsbooks in your state, the advantage you have for winning more money must be noticed.

There are so many advantages to there being multiple sportsbooks in your state.

  • Odds Shopping: Let’s say you think Etienne goes over that 63.5 line. You’re looking at DraftKings Sportsbook, and the odds are -110. From here, you look at FanDuel Sportsbook and see a line of 61.5 and -110. The odds are the same in this instance, but the line is two yards lower. If you thought he’d go over 63.5, you’ll undoubtedly feel the same way as 61.5 and get the same line value.

  • Welcome Bonuses: If you make an account at a new sportsbook, you can leverage the welcome bonus, such as a deposit bonus, free bets, or risk-free bets, to make more extensive wagers from a monetary point of view.

Existing Player Promotions: The NFL is the most wagered-on sport in the United States, so promotions are commonly offered. There could be free bets, profit boosts, odds boosts, or something else you may not have in your current sportsbook.

How We Pick Our Best Prop Bets?

There’s a plethora of ways to examine prop bets. You can examine the point spread for single-player props to see where the sportsbooks think the game will go.

For example, if a sportsbook has the Bulls as 13-point favorites, that could indicate the Bills will have a substantial lead at some point, leading to less passing from quarterback Josh Allen.

In that case, if we refer back to the rushing prop of Devin Singletary, it could make more sense.

That said, each case is different in terms of NFL roster construction.

Some other general rules of thumb are wide receiver vs. cornerback matchups, the offensive line versus a defensive line, and more.

There are plenty of nuances here.
